Should I go to NTI even if I am not in critical care?

I work on a medicine/telemetry unit, wondering if I could benefit from this conference. I was thinking of going because I eventually want to move into a stepdown unit or an ICU. Planning to attend the 2013 conference in Boston.

I have never worked in critical care, yet I attended this year's NTI convention in Orlando to work the Allnurses.com booth. It was an awesome experience filled with classes, learning opportunities, and positive vibes from the thousands of nurses who attended. I think you should attend.

All the advertising for NTI states that the conference is for "acute and critical-care nurses". There's so much that you could learn there that applies to your current position! It's totally worth it to attend. I work peds ICU and there's probably more content there that would apply to your job than there is for mine. Boston will be my 7th NTI.

Thanks janfrn for the info! Unfortunately, the dates for the conference this year don't sync with my calendar :( ... I graduate from my nurse residency program on May 23 and I am not sure if it will be worth going to Boston from NY for just a day or two before that, unless you think otherwise!

You'd be surprised at how much you can learn and how many connections you can make in just a day. But you will have a lot going on around that time. Maybe you should start planning now to be in Denver in 2014 or San Diego in 2015. Start putting away a little money to help pay for it, maybe join AACN and start getting their nursing journals and updates... That's how I got going. I had planned to go to San Antonio in 2003 but had just changed jobs and moved more than a thousand miles so wasn't able to make that one work. By 2007 I had the money in the bank and the time off so I was good to go. (I live in northwestern Canada so it's a big expense...) I've learned so much about not only acute and critical care nursing but also planning for conference attendance and which people I choose to travel with. We go for a full week and get in some gawky-tourist stuff while we're there and just have fun. Our group of 4 from here are the only international AACN chapter members (Lagniappe Chapter, Alexandria, LA) through contacts we made in Chicago in 2008. The benefits are enormous. So think on it. Make a plan. See you there - one day!

That sounds great, will definitely plan on the others. Just a little bummed that this one is in my backyard and I can't readily attend the whold thing. However, I'll see if perhaps I can swing a day, it's quite possible. And I am not opposed to travel, believe me! Would love to go to those cities! :) ... at least go back to San Diego, never been to Denver. Thanks for your reply, hoping to bump into you sometime!

I have gone for the last 5 years and I am not in Critical care but Cardiac Telemetry. I have learned so much and even became a PCCN. Go and enjoy the "sense of humor" only a nurse can.
