criminal record in nursing school???

Published

Hi! I am hoping to apply and be accepted in the Fall 2006 nursing program at my local community college. My concern is that i have a previous arrest on my criminal record and i was wondering how big of a problem this would be? The arrest was for domestic abuse.. To make a long story short my x-boyfriend never pressed charges and the state never did either so the case was dropped but i do have the arrest on my record. I do not have anything else on my record besides this. And i didn't abuse him, he came home drunk, he started a fight, he tried to choke me and i hit him, i left, he called the cops, florida law states someone has to go to jail for domestic abuse call, since he called and i was long gone when they got there i got the blame. i just want to know how hard this is going to make things trying to get into the nursing program and then become a nurse. i read online that the state boards judge case by case to allow to sit for the boards when you have criminal record. any info would be greatly appreciated!! i am willing to fight for this, i cant let this stop me, it already deterred me from becoming a teacher.. I just curious if anyone else has gone through this!!

Natorius,

Since you are about to start school, I implore you to contact your state BON NOW, if you haven't done so already. As I had mentioned in another post on this subject, it would truly be a shame if you went to school (even for one semester) and the BON decided that you can't be a nurse.

To be honest, your case is a little more troubling as it looks like you have a conviction and are on probation. That will show up in a background check.

Please contact your BON before you spend a lot of money on school.

Best wishes.

The Florida BON will not give you an answer. They will tell you to wait until you graduate. Then, when you submit your application they will make their decision. Sorry but this is true. And I live in Florida.
