criminal past?

Just a question. I have a family member thinking about going into nursing but she has a misdeamor on her record. The misdeamor is for child battery. It's not true but she is going to court to remove it but it's taking a while because on continances. P.S. the charge only came about because her mentally ill son told some lies to get even with his mother and step-father and CPS stepped in. Can she still pursue her nursing career?

Your friend should go to that state's Board of Nursing website. It will give the specifics on all that. I know in Georgia, it's mostly up to whoever is sitting on the Board for that year. I'm going through this now...I graduated in December '06 and I'm still waiting on the Board to give me authorization to take the NCLEX exam. I had to send all court documents to the Board, and write a Letter of Explanation because I got a DUI five years ago when I was 18.

Most charges just cause delays in the process, like by 3-6 months...but I don't know about battery and other violent charges. Those could be different.

questions we seem to be encountering more and more often have to do with the effects of a criminal history on nursing licensure:

  • is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a criminal history?
  • is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a dui or other related charges?
  • what happens if you are charged or convicted of a crime after licensure?
  • can i go to nursing school and/or be licensed if my record has been sealed or expunged?

these are questions that the members of allnurses.com cannot answer. the only reliable source of information is your state board of nursing.
