Credit checking for a job?..im in trouble :(

Published

Hey all,

Like many I am a new graduate RN, just passed boards last week. No job because im still trying to hold out for NICU (or PICU) I have started sending out apps nationwide.

Ive noticed having to sign for the "Fair Credit Report" on some apps and I feel really crummy

I just had to file chapter 7 two months ago, but before that i had AWSOME credit, im very responsible with money!!

Unfortunately my house caught fire on Jun 4th, and insurance issues forced me into bankruptcy.

Im scared this horrible event in my life is also going to hurt me finding my dream job..should i be up front with human resources? I feel that if they see it on my history I will never be able to explain the circumstances because they may write me off right then.

Advice is appreciated... :( *sigh*

i don't know how much they base on credit check.. when i was hired they did do a crdit check and told me it did count on my hiring process...

Did you have bad credit when you were hired? There is absolutely NO reason to pull credit reports just for the fun of it. There must be reform to stop this insane practice. I have stellar credit but I will fight tooth and nail before I agree to a random credit check.

Unfortunately this is a reality that I am seeing in many areas of life. Car insurance denial because credit score too low, even having been with this company 10 years and no accidents, I was cancelled. It really sucks. And from what I have read, nurses tend to have bad credit compared to other career options. Why?? I dunno, maybe we just tend to bite off more than we can chew alot of times. God knows in our career we have set ourselves up for some spooky situations that call for us to make life and death situations in 10 seconds or less. Why did we decide upon nursing anyways, ahhh we are typically codependant. Caretakers by nature. See a stray, take it in. Give of ourselves until we have none of ourselves to keep for ourselves. Try to be all things to all people. Make people happy, good samaratine, creator of good will toward men and advocate to the poor, indigent, and elderly, and diseased. No we don't have good credit scores, we have student loans for goodness sakes, sheesh.

But before we can be considered to worthy we must have a good credit rating. No matter that our benefits suck and our company's health insurance isn't worth a crap and now we owe everyone and their momma because of healthcare bills. For myself, these bills are mostly psychological visits to get meds because I am depressed and have mood swings. Well, funny thing is I didn't have either of those until I became a nurse and got bombarded by all the responsibilty, accountablity, and insecurity. Yes insecurity. I am not at all insecure about my nursing abilities but it has been my experience that corporate and other powers that be enjoy putting the prospect of unemployment over their employess heads as some kind of control mechanism. Ok so I'm paranoid too, but it's no wonder,.

Personally I do not believe your financial matters are any of your employers business period. I do not believe ones ability achieve perfection financially should be considered important when you aren't applying to be an accountant or other financial type employee. Your experience in your chosen field should be the basis upon which you are considered for your job, along with good references and adequate educational requirements.

Some say that how you handle your financial affairs directly correlates to how you will do with time management, helping the company save money by being less wasteful, being more organized in your job in general,. And while this all sounds well and great.... in a perfect world where I was being paid what I was worth, being given benefits befitting of a healthcare worker, and my employer making efforts to improve employee morale rather than create mass paranoia... would be a good place to start improving my credit difficulties I'd say.

Next think you know K-mart will require you to have credit score tatooed on your forehead to gain entrance to garden department.... ok silly, but what will they ask for next??? Documentation of ancestral bloodlines???? DNA tests to rule out mutants??? Again silly. But in my opinion financial credit scores above 650 to gain employment is silly, in fact criminal in my book,.

I can tell you that my credit hasn't been that great for many years. A long out divorce started the process and then being laid off (my husband and I) from jobs here and there. Finally when we had pulled things together, my husband had heart issues and could not work for 5 months.

It does not affect my job and it is BS to assume that someone with credit problems is going to be worse than someone else that doesn't. I understand that credit could weigh on your mind, but so could any other personal problem. Is that next? Check into every aspect of our personal lives to make sure we are "there" at work? I worked with one nurse that had so much drama with her husband that her mind was elsewhere all the time. And she tied everyone else up with her drama. ;)

BTW the truly crappy nurses I have some across just didn't care. And last time I checked, that isn't something you can pull off a report.

You might want to go ahead and disclose this circumstance ahead of time even before they do the check. They have the right to do a credit check....it's big brother watching all of us.
