I have been given a conditional job offer for a new position with local hospital. Credentialing services is insisting on contacting my current employer to request reference of competency. I fear the consequences of them doing so without a guaranteed offer. However I was told it must be done. How would you handle this?

I doubt any facility will guarantee an offer without checking references and ensuring that you can be credentialed. What is the offer conditional on? If it is conditional on your references and credentialing checking out, then this is the normal procedure.

If it must be done, then it must be done. If you resist, they might think you are hiding something. Good luck

I know, it's hard, especially when you are not even sure of the offer! In any case, I usually give them the human resource number to call for any questions (employment verification)... and that takes care of that most of the time. And your immediate manager may not even know unless it's a really small place. However, for "reference of competency", I consider those personal references and there is always someone in my place of work to put their names and number for it…it could be one of the supervisors that knows me personally... In which case i include their name and not necessarily the manager's name (especially if do not want him/her to know) pending official job offer. Good luck!
