Think you need to reword "evaluate a client's O2 level" to evaluate a client's respiratory status" as some of you examples won't give you concrete oxygen level results

I have to agree with NRSKarenRN. If you reword your statement, you will be able incorporate more identifying markers. Just IMHO.

I am trying to determine as many ways as possible to evaluate a client's O2 level. So far I have come up with these, can you think of any others??

1. pulse oximetry

2. ABG

3. skin color & circulation

4. assessing passage of air in a trach and/or need for suctioning

5. clubbing in fingernails

6. history of COPD, asthma or related disorders

7. CHF? or decreased cardiac output r/t cardiac impairment

8. dyspnea/anxiety in client

....any others you could add??

Thanks!

Sure. I've had CHFers lose consciousness when their O2 sats drop to around 60% for a few minutes. So a previously alert, oriented patient who suddenly gets confused always gets some O2 and a quick assessment for breath sounds and pulse ox.

It's almost always the first thought that comes to mind with an elder or a lunger who has sudden confusion.

Hope that helps.
