CPS flag

Published

Hi! I hope I'm putting this in the right place, but I've been wondering if anyone else has dealt with this. I'm trying to apply for RN by exam, and I had to consent to the Adam Walsh background check. More than 10 years ago DCF got involved with my family because my (now) ex-husband assaulted  my infant, apparently a couple times. It was completely unknown to me, as I was at work when it happened, but she appeared sick, so I was bringing her to her pediatrician and the ER several times; it was only after my ex said she fell off the bed, that the ER finally did a CT, and found subdural hematomas. Very obviously, DCF got involved, initially took custody (I got custody back at the 72 hour hearing, after my ex confessed and I filed for separation). Because it took so long for him to confess, DCF treated us both as perpetrators and supported the Care and Protection. He was ultimately  charged and convicted of his crimes, and my child is doing really great these days with no residuals (thank god!!!).

Any way... apparently my name came up on the DCF registry as being part of a protective services case, and now my application for licensure by exam is under review. With Good Moral Character, there is a list of items that the Board wants, but there is absolutely no information for individuals who show up on the Registry but have no criminal history. Does anyone know how long the review will take, or what they might want for documentation? I'm trying to pace myself studying for the NCLEX, and wonder if they will even let me? (I assume I'm listed as "neglectful" for "failing to keep the child safe", which I already feel sooo much guilt for, even though I was at work when it happened.) As additional info, I do currently work with children, and my history has never been a problem...

I received a letter from the MA BORN stating I had a DCF flag under my name and I was completely unaware. It had something to do with a sibling. Bottom line is, these things are very delicate, and the BORN does not play when it comes to documentation. I too hired the counselors at Capplis, Connors and Carroll PC. It took them 6 weeks to get it all resolved and I type this as a new grad RN. Don't wait till you have already submitted the paperwork and dug yourself a grave to seek counsel. It is much easier and timely to resolve before you send them documents. Good luck folks.

Hi,

A CPS case would need to be opened for them to flag you.

I hope this is true. I havent applied for nursing school yet but a friend mine said that a closed “unfounded” cps kept him from being accepted to three different nursing schools in Utah.

Niyelie,

Whatever became of your case?

Hello I graduated nursing school September of 2022. Even though I live in MA I went to Nursing school (LPN) I'm RI and took my NCLEX for that state of RI, did my background check and finger scan no problem got my ATT, took my NCLEX and passed. I applied for my temp license in MA and got that without an issue. However when it was time to apply for my permanent MA license I filed on 12/27/2022 and on 1/7/2023 I called the PCHSQ for a status update and was told I was under CPS REVIEW. Back in 2014 my now ex husband "attempted" to hang himself , my house was deplorable and cops where called and a CPS report was filed I believe for the condition of the house however by the time CPS showed up  10 pm that night the house was spotless. A case was opened and ultimately I ended up leaving my ex and divorcing him, obtaining a restraining order, attending DV victim therapy at the request of my case worker changing cities and in 2016 my case was closed. I never went to court and children were never removed from my care not even for a mintue. I wasn't told I was under review u til I called and still haven't gotten any type of communication from the board. I was wondering if anyone else had any insight on what the process looks like and how long it will take. As for the PCHSQ website I'm on 6 out of 6 completed

Hi,

It took me forever to get approved just for ATT. It took 3 months just to be told I was under review and another 6 months to get ATT. Just send in all the info they request- they asked me to write everything that happened and to send in references. It's a ridiculous process of victim shaming!

It took me only 3 months to get my ATT, and I personally dropped off all my documents to the board so they couldn't say it was misplaced. What I needed was request all my CPS documents from the time it was open and also needed to get when the cases were closed, if it's been 5 years or more you won't need to go in front of the board. You need an updated resume and make sure you have dates and addresses for all the places you worked on the resume. You will need good moral character letter from a professor as well as anyone else who knows you. I attached what I was sent and I also emailed gmc liaison to get a head start on everything once that's prob why it didn't take me as long to get an ATT. I attached the cori that has to be filled out and notarized as well as a release form that they need to have sign in order to get information. Hope all this helps.

Is that new? Because my case was over five years ago and I had to go before the board....

Thank you I have yet to receive any letters or emails stating what they would need from me but the case has been closed for about 6-7 years. Also I've contacted the GMC LIAISON twice with no response..how long after sending in your initial application did you get emails/ letters that stated more documentation was required

I received this today when I emailed someone about an update

So I emailed GMC Liaison and then I called the board every morning for an update, I think after nagging them for about 2 weeks someone finally emailed me what I needed.

What I attached is pretty standard for all cps cases so I would try and get all of it now while waiting for an email. CPS needs at least 2 weeks to get everything together so I would contact them for all the documents

This is what mines looked like as well and continued to look until I handled everything with BORN, they don't update anything on that site when it comes to being flagged so you will either receive a letter in the mail or an email from the BORN, just be really annoying and don't wait for them to reach out.

This is what I received from my case worker when it was my case, but the CPS flags were not due to my part it was the same thing with domestic violence and my kids were never taken out of the home either.
