CPNE in 2 weeks

Published

I'll be leaving for Utica, NY in 2 weeks for my CPNE! Sometimes I feel prepared and sometimes I don't! This date sure creeped up fast! Any last minute tips or words of wisdom?

I get the same feelings. Sometimes I feel like calling Excelsior and cancelling! We will pass with flying colors! :) Positive thinking!

I thought of another tip in reading some other posts.

Many people fail one or more of the labs. This is the easiest part of the CPNE. In preparation, I spent the $100 for the simulated lab kit. I set everything up on my porch table and I practiced, practiced. I timed myself on everything and was able to do all the labs in half the allotted time. Once at the CPNE, knowing that I could do each lab without rushing in half the time, allowed me to relax. I made a nmeumonic for each of the labs and you are allowed to take the time and write down your nmeumonic. I then took that step by step so that I did not miss anything. Lots of people fail in that area forgetting to identify the patient etc.

I also timed myself on other stuff. How long on average did it take me to write out my nmeumonics on PCS's. How long did it take me to write out a care plan etc. Knowing how much time I needed kept me from getting too nervous and panicking.

On the first PCS, you are given the chance to review the chart the night before and work on your care plan before you come to the first PCS. Read the progress notes from the Patient's doctor. My first patient had cancer and pain was a given. However, when I read the progress notes, I found that the goal of the patient and the doctor was to get her to eat and she was trying to reduce the amount of pain medication she was on so that she could have a better appetite. My care plan concentrated on her failure to thrive and tied in with Maslow's most basic needs.

Hope this all helps.

Thanks Mudwoman! I've been watching how long it takes me for labs as well, and it's nice to know i have plenty of time to complete them so I don't need to rush.

I've written out mneumonics and have timed that as well. I haven't timed myself with careplans though, so I'm going to do that as well. Thanks for the tips!
