CPNE subQ Question

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Just started viewing Robs DVDs..for the subQ lab sim, he shows the injection (into the potato) at 45 degree angle for insulin. I was always taught insulin and heparin are 90 degrees. I'm confused already! Help! I know I MUST study the EC way for the exam, but I just want to double check w/ someone who definitely knows, thanks!

one of the best things I got to study with is "taylor's clinical nursing skills". it's a book that has step by step instructions and pictures on every procedure you can imagine. I got the 2nd edition (current edition is 3rd but there's virtually no difference) for like $10 on half.com. what it says about subcu is that on "normal" people you give it at 90 degrees, and in emaciated people at 45. I can tell you that the insulin syringes I've seen (if you're giving insulin) would have to go at 90 degrees because they're so short.

I have heard many people talk about errors in rob's dvd's. personally I am going to use sheri taylor's online workshop (the live workshop by another provider near me was canceled :(

also, this forum isn't the best for cpne questions. you'll have better luck and more info if you use excelsior's official cpne discussion board. also, the facebook group "let's conquer the cpne beast" is an excellent source of questions and info from people. if you don't know how to get on excelsior's board, let me know.

OK, I have that book on my list to order and I found the EC board..thank you

EC says give IM's and Sub-Q's at 90 degrees....take the gift and run with it

I always though sub-q in the back of the arm was 45 degree angle. Not every sub-q is given in the abdomen. Is the 90 degree also tru for the arm cutanious tissue?

generally speaking, it would depend on the length of the needle. 3/8 90 degrees, 5/8 45 degrees.

During a PCS yes I agree but I thought the topic was for the sim's labs. If not my mistake
