CPNE skills

Someone on the EPN posted this today, I am wondering how you guys are doing it. When you are giving your SQ and IM injection are you practicing to scoop and recap the needle? Recapping is something I never do and was taught never to do, in the study guide it says "IF you are recapping your needle use the one handed scoop technique". I am wondering if we may leave gloves on to do the whole station (I don't usually draw up meds without gloves anyways... I know kinda weird, but especially insulin, it smells bad LOL).... for IM station we don't put the needle on until after we get our gloves on or atleast this is what I thought and how I have been practicing it, I have been drawing up med, putting in sterile wrapped, putting on gloves and then attaching appropriate needle... or for the SQ station can we ask the examiner to hold the syringe after they verify 2nd dose of insulin and said "can I put my gloves on while you hold that?", this is what Rob says to do and what my plan was, I was not going to risk stabbing the table with an insulin syringe trying to scoop the cap back on, but the students on the EPN made it sound like capping is required?

What do you guys think???

I live less than an hr away from that workshop, I wanted to go to it, but I already paid for Chancellors. I heard so many good things about it too!

Thank you for your kind words...Chancellors is now taught by Ec Grads and I have heard only positive things about it. Good Luck!

Thanks for your input!! I am practicing my scooping... trying not to stab the table... already broke a couple needles :-/

Can I ask how you prepared for your CPNE and what you feel the best prep is for those who cannot take a hands on workshop? I am trying to utilize all the resources I can afford but I just feel like I need something to tie it all together. Thanks in advance!!,

Sure I will tell you

1st I split my manual into sections.

Then chewed-on and digested 1 section at a time

Got the skills kit and setup a lab at home… Did labs every day… and I got the time cut down to 10 minutes each

Then I went looking for mneumonics didn’t like what others posted and knew they were already old from the previous edition so I made up my own. I wrote my mneumonics out every day 5-10 times a day until I knew them all and could write all out in under 10 minutes.

Care planning and charting….I did a scenario with the care plans, charting and the eval 5 days a week and sent it to EC to correct. I did my ½ hour phone calls and if I didn’t have questions I did another scenario with care plans charting and the eval over the phone with the Ec staff member.

I sent questions in through the message center 3-5times a week.

I drove EC Crazy!....

I also did the EC CPNE Workshop at the College in NY.

It is unfortunate that EC has cut back their services especially for Care Planning Assistance through the message center for free. And what they charge for their Care Plan Course and Documentation course Is very expensive. What are they now?…$225.00 or $250.00 each.

It is possible to Pass CPNE without a Hands on Workshop…but it depends on what you need. If you need hands on…. it’s a lot less expensive to pay for a workshop than it is to pay for CPNE twice

Oh and since I don't have details about other Online Workshops and what they include I really can't comment on them.

Wow, thank you so much for all this information!!!

Usually what I do is I pull out a random PCS from the study guide or the website and I go through it start to finish and then I do the charting and the care plans. I am doing two EC online conferences for documentation and beginning CPNE, starting tomorrow actually, got them with scholarship from EC!

I think I can do it without a workshop, I KNOW I can and I have to!!!! I have been studying so hard for two months and I have almost 2 months to go. I work in a hospital so most patient care I am comfortable with I just need to control my nerves and make sure everything is perfect. I will just say lots and lots of prayers too. I appreciate your insight and would be happy with any tips you can give me to pass :-)
