CPI certification needed / new grad

Specialties Psychiatric

Published

I am a recent nursing graduate applying for psychiatric nursing jobs. Many recruiters have told me my application will not be considered with out CPI certification. So many of these classes are offered through your employer; however since I am unemployed and need this class to be considered for a job I seem to be in an impossible spot. I was able to find one class offered for $600. Is this reasonable? Could any one offer any advice as to how better economically attack this issue. Thanks!!!

Where to get CPI training ?

My suggestion would be sign up as per diem at some psych facility that offers/ requires CPI and just stay on so that you can avoid that expensive cost. I live in Oklahoma and have kept mine current. Hope that will help... Only concern is if you move to another state you may have to do the same thing wherever you go. You only have to work a shift or two to get so this may help you. Good Luck!

I am a Nurse in Utah Trying to get a travel Psych Nurse Job in California but to even be considered they require a CPI Certification. I contacted CPI and they are teaching and certifying here in Utah for 1500.00 to 4000.00 talk about high way robbery. I took a CPI Course with one of my jobs but it has since expired how does a none employee get certified cheaper than that, so I can work Psych in California. CPI seems like they are monopolizing Psych nursing and can charge out of line prices to people who do not get certified through a hospital or care system. Any Ideas for getting certified cheaper than 1500.00-4000.00 in Utah

Just a note - Most psych facilities in CA want MAB training not CPI. We don't hire travelers but we offer MAB classes monthly for all employee's including kitchen staff and housekeeping at no cost to the employee.

I work in CA and haven't come across an employer that wants MAB. They all want CPI. Perhaps it's a regional thing.

I (as well as a lot of other posters in this thread) find it very odd that employers want you to have CPI just to consider you for the job. Since employers require staff to have it, they will train their staff including new hires.

IMO, I'd also try contacting the HR departments of these hospitals directly to ask if CPI training is included. I'd try a few different recruiters because something about that doesn't seem right.

Best of luck.

When I did registry in CA, we weren't required to have CPI to get hired, though it helped. They would let us get trained at the site we were assigned to for free. But I can only speak for that one agency--other agencies may have different policies.

Otherwise, another poster had a great idea: get hired PRN somewhere at a place that does use CPI and get certified there.

Whoa. My hospital paid for my CPI training (thank you hospital). $1500-4000 for a one day class is insane.

I honestly think they the corporation bought out all the other places that do cheaper CPI. I haven't been able to find one for under $1,000. It can't be an online class either. I need my CPI to have more jobs open. I am a travel Psych Nurse and it has been a pain in my butt looking all over the United States for classes.

Thanks,

Every place I've work (RN or non-RN) has provided deescalation training of the modality they want you to have. I'm starting a second job soon and even though I have active CPI certification they are going to retrain me as part of new hire orientation.
