Couple of Pharm Questions

1. Why is topical epinephrine used to treat epitaxis?

2. What beta-agonist is used for maintenance therapy:

3. What drug/class of drugs should asthma patients not take?

I have looked everywhere for these answers

Do you have a pharmacology textbook?

Question 1 - What is the mode of action of epi? What is epistaxis? Those two questions should clarify the answer for you.

Question 2 - I can't think of a good hint for this one without the answer being readily apparent (most of us around allnurses don't like to feel we're "doing someone's homework for them," although we don't mind helping out - just FYI). I would think this answer would not be that difficult to find in a pharm textbook (mine only lists a few beta adrenergic agonists for the long term treatment of asthma)

Question 3 - Think cardiac meds, which ones might also have an effect on the lungs?

1.epitaxis is a nosebleed. You would use epi because it would constrict the vessels in the nose, thus stopping the nosebleed.

3. Asthma patients should not take a nonselective beta antagonist because these drugs are not selective for cardiac cells and can cause bronchospasm and precipitate an asthma attack. An example is timolol eye drops
