Hello, I am a prenursing student right now that is applying for nursing school. I had to take a CPR class today, and I have to add that I knew nothing about CPR previously. So he taught ( sounded like he mumbled the whole time) and we watched a video. When it was time to perform the CPR on a dummy, I did well in the chest compression part but when it came to the rescue breathing, it took me three times to get it right. I felt like he was looking for any chance he had to correct me, even when I was doing the chest compression he kept telling me to change my pace. Now here's the problem, when I didn't get the rescue breathing right the first two times, he said I better rethink wanting to be a nurse. I know it sounds stupid but that has really been bothering me especially since I'm the kind of person that has to practice something and make practice mistakes before I perfect it. He's a RN but teaches these classes, very blunt and has years of experience in the ER. I know for sure I want to be a nurse. Am I over thinking this? If I have to practice a lot does that mean I can't be a nurse? Has anything like this every happened to you? like discouraging you.
When I was in nursing school, I never had any terrible experiences with the staff nurses but did have a couple that were snarky and many who just ignored us. I resolved then and there that I would be the exact opposite when I found myself in that position.I go out of my way to make the students and volunteers feel welcome and valued.
Let each and every one of you do the same when your time comes.
I could have written this. In addition, I felt unwelcomed when I started my current job, which served to inspire me even more to be kind and welcoming to all who enter my unit. This includes new RNs and assistants, students, float RNs, and the wonderful volunteers who give freely of their time. I'm excited about my work and love sharing it with others!
I still remember the first nurse who came and introduced herself to me directly. It was very meaningful as the new guy in a department with 125 nurses, 30 attendings, and enough residents to sink the Titanic.I could have written this. I've always been the shy, wallflower type and it's terribly difficult for me to approach people that I don't know... and I am so thankful when people take the initiative to welcome me.
Now that I'm established as one of the unofficial leaders of the group, I make sure that everybody feels welcome, including med students and residents (toward whom some of the nurses are downright antagonistic.)
Well, you *did* post this topic... inadvertently.I am SUPER CONFUSED! I did not POST this Topic. I replied to a posting from a young (brand new) nursing student who was told by her CPR instructor that "maybe you shouldn't be a nurse". It is so very strange how this came to be a thread, and I am wondering where the OP has gone?
You must have hit the first big green button to post a new topic rather than the last big green button leave a comment.
You can contact the moderators and ask them to delete the thread though since it's not problematic, they may decline. You could also ask them to close the thread... which they would likely do.
You could also search for the original post and ask the moderators to merge the threads... which would be the best solution.

Now this is exceptionally strange, when I search the title of this thread (the title of which was created by the OP), the following comes up:

When you click to link it, it brings you right back here to this thread.
Did the original poster delete her post while I was replying? I cannot locate her thread anywhere, but you can see in the search summary that she was here. So *******' strange!
This is a great thread please do leave it up and the comments made are just as great! Too many posters write about being bullied its nice to know there is a solution...toughen up...dont take it personal...and when you are in that position one day..make a difference be welcoming and make other newbies feel welcomed....i will be more prepared when i start nursing school because of threads like this and posters like ones above..Thank you all
I don't wish for it to be removed, just merged with the original posters thread to whom I was replying. I think having her original thread here will put my response in context to her specific issue, and many similar issues. I am glad everyone's words here are helpful to others. We are all on the same team.
Good day, Nabeelaodu:
I've been through CPR training several times now. Sometimes the chest area breathing system on the dummies is not set up correctly; there could be a tear. Somes the masks are very used; they may not seal correctly. Do not let this experience change your path.
Thank you.
