Could I sit for NCLEX RN

World Registration

Published

Hi All,

Am a three year Diploma holder in Nursing and Midwifery from India. I have almost five years of hospital experience as Registered Nurse in India between 2006 and 2011. I still hold a RN License in my home country. However, I have been working as a Practical Nurse here in U.A.E. since last four four years. Now, I would like to sit for NCLEX RN. Am I eligible to do that?. Is there any restriction to sit for NCLEX RN due to my current PN status?. Suggestions from someone who can guide in this regard will be highly valuable and appreciated.

You would need to contact the state board of nursing to see if your education makes you eligible to take the NCLEX RN. Your work experience does not factor into the decision.

You don't just "sit the NCLEX." You would need to decide in which US state you want to pursue licensure, and apply to that state Board of Nursing. In the US, each individual state licenses and regulates nurses within its own borders, and passing the NCLEX is just one of the requirements and steps for licensure. Work experience has no relevance for licensure; the BON's decision (about your eligibility) will be based on whether your nursing education meets the state BON's standards/requirements.

Like above comments.

First look at the state that you would like to reside. The most state BON lists all the requirements on their website.

You might also have to get your transcript translate to be equivalent to the U.S. Standards.

When end you submit all the required document to that particular state, they will let you know if you are eligible or not. It varies by each state.
