Could I be a high school nurse?

Published

Hi,

I just got an opportunity to interview for LPN position in a high school. It is a very exciting opportunity for me but I am not sure what are the responsibilities of high school nurse and specially they have a RN on staff. Will I be just assisting the RN ? I don't have much experiences with high school kids either professionally or personally although I am pretty open minded when a neighbor high school kid want to talk to me. Should I mention about my personal life experiences if I don't have experiences with high school kids? I was pleasantly surprised to be called because I am a new grade with two elementary school kids. In the mean time, I am concerned if I am a good fit for high school kids. Will an understanding mind be enough for them?

Thank you for any advice.

Are you a School Nurse now?

Hi no, sorry I didn't see a notification for your reply. I am working in a LTC facility. But I am very interested in school nursing. Earlier, I just got a call for interview tomorrow. It is a one on one care for special need kids under RN supervision. It is a great opportunity for a new grade like me to have a RN there to learn from so I am very excited but not sure what to prepare for interview.

:)

Are you a School Nurse now?

Good luck on your interview. A 1-1 nurse will be very different from a generalized school wide nurse. Is the position through the school or an agency? Is it just for care during school hours or on the bus/at home? I imagine that home health boards may have more input if this isn't a "school" position. I know when I applied for a HH peds agency they had nurses do 1-1 during school hours.

Hi, DEgalRN, this opportunity is with the school board and during school hour only. It is located in a more well off area that compares to the surrounding area. I imagine that is the reason this school district can hire LPN to do one on one care for special needs children.

Thank you for your good wishes :)
