Could I even survive nursing school? C student

Published

I have been a C student all my life. I have never really done better and I have asked for help. I just took my final exam for physiology and got a C in the class and now I have to take it over again, just like anatomy. Both times I missed it by 2% to get a B.

The thing is I have No Excuse for getting a C since this was the only class I was taking.

I actually studied a lot for this class too, but I make dumb mistakes on exams sometimes.

I am 24 and I don't even have a real job, since I just work for my dad at his company. At the same time I just got turned down by the hospital I always wanted to work. I am still applying but I get no responses even from grocery stores.

I feel like I am running out of time since I am 24 and I am still in school doing pre reqs.

The only good thing is I do have a bachelors in Business.

Should I even consider nursing school if they accept me?

If they accept you then you have as much of a right to be there as anyone else.

I am 27 and I just finished my prerequisites. You are still so young. You are already holding a bachelor's degree, you just need to keep going and find a way to be motivated about nursing and life. Whats the rush? Its your life, no one else's.

Good day:

Unless your dad pays you to sit and do nothing, you have a real job. Working for family members is a real job for a number of people. Now, that stated, have you sat down with your professors to see what you could be doing differently? Can you review the tests privately with your professor to see how you could avoid making those types of mistakes? Have you tried changing up your study habits? I.e. if you don't record and listen to the lectures, do so. If you don't rewrite / type up your written notes, do so?

Have you investigated what type of learner you are in terms of visual, kinetic, etc? Then adjust your study habits accordingly. Does your school allow you to take tests separate from your class? At the school I attend, they have a set up where if a student and teacher agree that there's a test-in-class issue (most teachers I've been with are very accepting of this), they will set it up for the student to take the test in a more quiet area separate from their class mates (main exception being lab material).

Thank you.

I was a C student as well (graduated with a 2.99) and failed or got Ds in courses that were really not that hard. I wasn't in a major where I needed particularly good grades and I wasn't very motivated.

Now that I'm doing my prereqs and know that I really want to be a nurse, I'm getting straight As. Now that I'm a little older and wiser I know that the stakes are much higher- I know now how hard it is to find a good job, I want to be able to get a house and start a family, etc. If it's a question of motivation you may find yourself doing much better once in nursing. That's something only you can figure out about yourself though.

I've said it before and I'll say it again-grades are MUCH more about time and dedication than intelligence.

I am big fan of not giving up on your dreams and trying again, so I will start there. If nursing is what you really want, you should reevaluate how you are studying and retake the course, get someone to help you study, and do everything to bring up your grade!

But........there is my other point of view after just completing my first quarter in NS: Nursing classes are tough, demanding, and do not let up. I have read numerous posts that the previous "A" students no longer earn A's in NS. This is due to the fact that nursing school requires a different way of thinking. It is not only learning the information, it is being able to apply use critical thinking to apply the information. Taking a test where all the answers are actually correct, but you have to pick the "most correct" answer can be tough.

You are still young at 24, especially for a second-degree nurse, and only you can answer if you want to go to nursing school. Good luck in your decision!

I was a C student all through high school. To be honest, I never really worried about studying or focused while I was at school. I really thought that was the best I could do. Now I am an A student. I pay attention and take good notes in lecture. I learned which way of studying was best for me and I work at it now. I will never be one of those people that can just get As without trying but I do put forth the effort now. Maybe try learning what works best for you in methods of study.

I was a c student too prior to nursing school. But thanks to tutoring from our department, study groups, and sheer determination, I made it through nursing school. Yes I will admit, I did fail a class while in the program (patho), but my next go around I was more focused and I did a lot better. You can do it too!

I wasn't a strong student when I was 20. But now I'm 40 and my family has had to make so many sacrifices to allow me to go to school. And I want so badly to be a nurse so I make sure to do my best.

Look your professors up on RateMyProfessor and only take the good ones. Put the extra time in to understand the material. You might have to get supplemental books from the library or look at YouTube or iUniversity videos to better understand the material. If you want to be a nurse, you will need to do well in these fundamental classes. If you can't, this might not be the right career for you.

If that's the case, figure out what you want and fight for it.

First of all your not too old so get that out of your head NOW!!!! . I know of people who are attending nursing school at age 55 and above. Second.... Just take one course at at time or find better study methods and test taking skills. I know most community colleges and larger 4 year universities have classes on study skills and note taking for incoming freshmen. I know plenty of older students that have taken these classes for new tips/tricks to help them tackle - study skills, anxiety, and other test taking strategies. Many people learn by different methods and you just need to take time and find the right method for you. Third..... As long as you are pursuing your dream it is a job. PERIOD! Going to a university/college is a full time job in itself so don't get so discouraged. Plus the fact that your working with your father can be a challenge in itself as well. Never give up on your dreams.

I have a quote for you:

If you can’t believe in miracles, then believe in yourself. When you want something bad enough, let that drive push you to make it happen. Sometimes you’ll run into brick walls that are put there to test you. Find a way around them and stay focused on your dream. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
