Correct answer to interview question

Published

I was asked in an interview something to this effect.

If you had researched and designed a plan for an assigned patient the night before and the next day the Anestheisologist told you that he wanted to approach the plan for anesthesia completely different from your plan what would you do?

Not exactly the wording but you get the idea and I just wonder if my answer was in the ballpark?

Caveat: I am neither an SRNA nor a CRNA.

I would assume the question is asking what you would do as a CRNA. As a student you'll listen to the MDA if you want to stay in school!

honestly i think this question is about what you would do as a student. that is what they are really looking for and is pretty common to ask. they probably want to know that you would seek out the crna/mda after the case to discuss why they wanted to change. as a student you will write up your care plan and then come into the OR to find out your preceptor has another plan. you go with the flow but you ask why, when it is appropriate. if you were a practicing crna then you wouldn't be dictated by an mda about how to run your own case, at least at most facilities. and if you were, you may want to look for a more autonomous place to work.

Okay, maybe the right thing to say first is a question: in what capacity am I practicing? Because I can see it both ways.

i dont think it's an "i know more than you thing". if you prepared a plan based on a quality assessment, pt interview and were aware of the global situation. i say defend your stance with your rationale, and then be flexible to a different opinion that has merit. it's more a "this is WHY i'm doing this or that" but please teach me something new or better.
