I am in need of some advice. I am a PICU nurse in the UK and signed a contract with a recruiter in the USA 2 years ago. Initially I was told that I would not be expected to work outside my area of expertise, but as time (and the immigration process) has marched on I have discovered that the agency I have signed with has lost most of it's contracts leading to recruitment in the adult field alone. Unfortunately my contract does not specify a paeds post. I have contacted 40+ hospitals, all of whom tell me they would be interested in my skills if I were not signed to this agency. What should I do? Do I work in adults for 18 mths (A 10 year step back in my career to a new starter position) or do I keep holding out for that paeds position that seems to allude me.
Is there any chance that you can come out of your contract with the recruiter and see if one of the hospitals will sponser you for your green card. 2 years seems a long time and your still waiting. I take it you have passed your NCLEX exam? I have just passed my NCLEX and my recruiter has informed me that I should be out in the states by the end of the year as at the moment immigration is only taking approx 6-8 months.

You didn't have a time limit written into your contract? Has your agency spent any money already on your green card processing? If nothing has been spent, you should be able to get out of it.
But let this be a warning to all of you.........................many recruiters think that a nurse is a nurse and can easily work in any area of the hospital......
WRONG...............if you only want a specific area make sure that it is written into your contract. AND if they have nothing for you in a certain amount of time your contract is null and void.
