Hello,
I am a 42 year old man who has always wanted a career in the medical field. I currently work in a low satisfaction job that pays pretty well, but I want something more. I have considered quitting my job and going into an LVN program, mostly because LVN can be completed fairly quickly and I can work at that while upgrading to RN.
It is too bad that there doesn't seem to be any private RN programs that may charge an arm and a leg, but do not have the long wait lists. I have seen that Western Career College in Sacramento, Ca has an LVN program.
Do any of you know of a similiar program for RN that I have missed. I have the money to pay for the training, but not the time to wait and be unemployed.
Also, do you think that 42 is too old to start? I have had some training in that I was an EMT and participated in rescue competitions in that capacity.
Thank you

Go for it! When I started nursing, I was 27, there were 19 & 20 yrs old students, but also a woman (I never forget). She was 45, had been a house wife, send 2 kids through college and her son had just graduated the previous year. She made it.
There will be financial sacrifices if you do not plan on working. But I believe it's worth it.
When I became a RN, there was a LPN I worked with who went through the Regency Program. She made it, matter fact she went further after 5 years of staff nursing, she teaching nursing now. Occasionally, she does staff nursing through agency. GO FOR IT.
We need more men in nursing. I must say, you guys get faster perks than the female. Your promoted in administrative positions are quicker, back home. GO FOR IT! Treasure

Bert,
Got you beat by 5 years here, and I am in no way to old to start a new career, and you being the young pup shouldn't even think that way.
No but really, I am 47, and like yourself am a former EMT from years back, but have always wanted to become a nurse, just didn't have the right opportunity to do it. Well now I do, and I just graduated the first part of this month, and found out that I passed boards a week ago today. You are only as old as you feel, think, and act, darn that makes me 20 something then.
As far as schools are concerned, there are all kinds of online LPN to RN programs available, don't know much about them, and I would ask around before giving them any money, but they are out there.
Take Care, and keep us posted,
Dan
