Consultancy pay

Published

Having a little grumble...I worked for a large private K-12 school for 14 yrs as their Health Team Manager/School Nurse. I left the job in June, but told them I would stay on as a consultant to help with the transition. I have been consulted many times over the summer and have helped out when needed. Today I receive an on-call contact for the 2019/20 school year to continue with the consulting, the pay rate offered was 12% less than what I was being paid in previous years. I am inclined to turn this down, am I wrong? I know I'm not in the same position which I was before, but surely consultancy pay should be same/higher rate not lower?

I left a job in June and offered to stay on payroll as a substitute if they ever needed. They offered me $5 less per hour than I was making and I told them no. They adjusted the contract. I would use tell them you won't do it for less than you were making. The worst they can do is refuse and then you can move on.

i'd turn it down... 12% is a huge drop. My guess is that they need you more than you need them.

I went back to them and said I wouldn't do it unless I was on my old pay rate. I got my old pay rate:) Thanks!

Nursing is the only career where your "side job" pays as much or more than your FT gig. Sometimes they need reminding.
