Hi, My husband is a third-year nursing student in British Columbia, Canada. We are considering moving to Norfolk when he is finished school (spring 2005). We have been in contact with Sentara and are considering Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as a future employer. We have a lot of information on the company, but the one thing a brochure can't tell you is what the work environment is like. Does anybody have any experience there that they would like to pass on?

I don't really work per se at SNGH, but I'm currently going to school with Sentara. We've done clinicals there and I think that it is a wonderful hospital to work at. It's in the list of the top 50 hospitals, but I don't know what number though. The nurses are nice and they even have recreational stuff like jewelry sales and walks.
Hope that helps some :).
Thanks, it helps a lot and it's good to hear.

I work at NG now as a Care Partner and as a general rule Sentara is a good company to work for. They offer alot of great benefits and offer a good deal of flexability. But as with all hospitals there is a certain amount od "politics" and that can be discouraging.

Norfolk region has mostly nice weather and a lot of recreation and cultural opportunities. The Atlantic coast is great, but be advised that the hurricane season can be nasty.

Hello..
I work in the ED @ Norfolk General! I really (most of the time) love my job and the hospital as well. I started in the ED right after graduation from LPN school, my nurse manager was nice enough to take a chance that I would be able to handle the ED as a new grad. I guess she was right because I have been there for 4 yrs. It's a teaching hospital so the opprotunities seem endless I have learned so much at this job I am now working on pursuing my RN! Good luck!

I work for the children's hospital next door to SNGH. (SNGH doesn't do pediatrics.) While I can't compare it as an employer to the other hospitals in the region, I have not heard anything particularly bad about it and would guess that it is a reasonable place to work. They are particularly strong in the fields of cardio-vascular stuff, diabetes, trauma, and obstetrics.
I love Norfolk and the greater Hampton Roads area -- moved here 7 years ago without knowing a soul -- came just for the job. It's a great mid-sized city with a lot of choice in the types of places to live. I live only 5 minutes from the hospitals as I hate commuting. But if you are willing to commute a little, you can chose to live near the beach, or in the country surrounded by farms, on a river or lake, or in "typical suburbia," or a down-town city neighborhood, etc. Lots of choices.

Hi! I am currently working on a Trauma/Burn/Cardiac/Ortho floor at SNGH. I happen to really love what I do. We get such a mix of people up here! Pts and employees. Like any other job there are some things you could do without but overall I have been very happy with my experiences here. I would recommend this area to anyone. The climate can leave a little something to be desired when the humidity is through the roof, but there is plenty to do and having the beach so close is wonderful. I hope you enjoy the area when you get here! Good luck to you!
