Considering Nursing

Hello!

I'm in college, and considering switching to nursing. I'm still trying to find out a little more about nursing and would love it if ya'll have any input. A couple of random questions--I've heard that there tends to be politics or drama among nurses--is that true? Also, how long did it take for you to feel confident working as a nurse? I like the idea of helping others, but the thought of being responsible for someone's life scares me a little.

Thanks!

Politics and drama exist among all people ...in every place, in every line of work.

They say it takes two years to feel "OK" and seven years to feel "confident". I've found that to be true, for myself.

Politics and drama exist in all fields. Nurses experience that, not only between themselves.. but with patients, families, doctors and administration.

You will many times, be responsible for life and death. Sometimes., you will be cleaning up a massive GI bleed and calling a code...before you have breakfast. It ain't no party.

"Helping" people will take everything you have.

Just like in other professions, it depends on where you work and who your co-workers, managers and patients are. Nursing is a varied field.

I am about three years in and I feel ok. I am not terrified like I used to be and I am much more independent and capable. But I have some growing to do as a nurse before I can say I'm very confident.
