Considering case management job

Published

I am an experienced RN ( 25 years) Home Health , Psych, LTC and management at SNF. I live in Michigan and have an interview with BCBS coming up. This is a work at home job . Does anyone do this sort of case management? What are pros vs cons? I have pretty good computer skills but more I could learn, and am willing. The job is stated to be 40 hours is this realistic? I was told I would be provided a laptop and other equipment necessary , I would need a separate space for work with a locked door due to privacy concerns. (Seems reasonable) Is the router wireless? Can I move my laptop to other areas of house if necessary when privacy would not be compromised? Lots of questions and would appreciate any comments. Thanks

Hi,

I have worked for a Medicaid insurance company for the last 3 years after 21 years of clinical experience in various areas. I've been employed in the Quality area which encompasses Disease and Perinatal Case Management. I would outreach telephonically to members with Diabetes, Asthma, or CHF while in the Disease Management team and then to pregnant and postpartum members for perinatal outreach. It's very rewarding talking to the clients. I have worked from home (telecommuted)and was required to have a separate work space. I also, as you mentioned, needed to have a door that locked for the work area to meet HIPAA requirements and and was not able to use a wireless router. I was required to go into the office one day a week which I think is important for team building and educational training. There are other case mangers in the company who also telecommute and work in utilization review, homecare and pre- certificiation. We worked 40 hr/week and it was great particularly when the weather's bad.

Specializes in hospital and community care.

I have had case management positions in hospitals, community based settings and in the insurance industry. You may want to inquire if they expect you to work with in the office setting for any length of time before you are allowed to telecomute. In my experience, they want to offer you time to learn the different product lines, the software and see how you fly before giving you a large amount of independance. This makes sense on both sides of the coin since the different employer contracts can have different pieces you can offer the member. It is great to be able to sound out your experiences with a caller with a supervisor who is skilled in this speciality. You don't say if you have begun to seek certification, but your employer will want to maintain some level of standard, so ask if they assist you with getting your certification, too. Good luck, I enjoy this level of skill in the nursing process.
