CT income tax question

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

I wonder if you guys can help answer a question for me. I live and work in NY as a staff nurse in an ER. I am thinking of re-locating to CT. Currently it seems like I get taxed for more than

30% of my paycheck.

Approximatley how much of your check is taxed in CT?

When I move I expect to get paid less hourly but I am wondering if I will make near the same amount depending on how much I am taxed.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

I believe it equals out to about 23% here. Hope that helps.

it helps alot thank you!!!

I just did the math I think I am actually giving up 38% of my check to NY and NYC taxes!!! That settles it I'm moving to CT!!!!

isn't the difference in pay too much? will it really help that much?

I've considered moving to CT, i'm currently out of the country working as a missionary but I have to go back to the states this december....

I am still in the process of looking for a house in CT and doing research about salary and taxes in CT. That's why I asked the question here hoping people from CT would be able to give me an idea of how much they take home every check. If 23 percent on the income tax is correct The difference may not be that extreme. I am gonna be in serious trouble if I buy a house and have monthly payments I can't afford because my calculations were wrong. Anyone else from CT care to comment?

Thanks:rolleyes:

It depends if you're going to be able to claim dependants or not. 23% sounds right, tho. I claim one exemption, use head of household status and out of an earned 650.00 I take home 500.00. Hope that helps.

I looked at my paycheck stub...the amount taken out for state income tax is 4.85% of my gross income. When you were saying "30%", did you mean everything taken out (fed, state, fica). I claim 6 dependents on my fed, so less is taken out. I have worked with NY nurses from pools who come over here for a week at a time because they say they can earn so much more in CT. Cost of living is high here. I don't know this for sure, but I would think cost of living in NY depends on where in NY (rural vs city vs suburbs).

Good Luck with the decision. You are right to "get the scoop" first!!

hi everyone, since were on tax ques for ct well, heres mine: I live in ma but, have considered joining jazneek staffing in ct. will i have to pay ct tax d/t the company is located in ct and ma tax d/t i live in ma??? all advice would be greatly appreciated:)

Your question has multiple answers;

CT state tax depending on income is about 3-5%

Depending on what your Federal status is will depend on the rest.

If you are coming from NY your state tax is higher than CT and cost of living issues aside it should be slightly less.

Cost of living is the real question you need to know.

If you're moving to Southern CT it is more costly than Central or Northern CT.

I do administrative consulting for many of the Hospitals and the difficulty with relocation is making sure you do your homework - no one likes costly surprises. Hope this helps.

Just remember that if you move to CT you may be paying less in taxes out of your pay check but you will get billed for property taxes,,on ANYTHING that is registered, once a year. So you pay yearly taxes on your car house boat etc. What is important in where you are looking to live in CT is the towns MIL rate, or the rate at which your property is taxed at.
