confused prenursing student

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

I am currently a prenursing student at a 4 year university. I had planned to get my bsn here but i need to retake physiology so i plan to apply next year for fall 2008. However, I don't know if i should continue here or go to a tech college and get my adn now. Although most tech colleges up here like matc in madison wi have a 2 to 3 year wait list, Herzing college has direct entry, however, it is about $5,000 a semester, which is more than im paying at the university. I just don't know what to do and i don't have money to waste. Another option could be to get my cna and work while on the waiting list. Please help and let me know the best choice! Thanks.

In the big picture, an extra year to get started in your program isn't that much. As you noted, many RN programs end up taking at least 4 years once pre-reqs and waitlists are thrown into the equation.

How long is the program at your school once you're admitted? I'm asking becaue many university BSN programs start at sophmore or junior year with pre-reqs taken during the first year or two.

Can you take some electives that will apply to the BSN program during that year and have a lighter load later? Maybe you can get a job working in health care during that year (phlebotomy, nursing assistant, unit secretary). That would certainly help your nursing school application.

Have you talked with an advisor from your school's nursing program about your options?

i am in sort of the same situation as you are. im also in a pre-nursing program and i really just want to start my career, but the money is sort of an issue. i did hear though that a hospital can fund you if you decide to work for them for a certain amount of time. i hope that is true, but would you know who to talk to? im also deciding whether or not to get my ADN. i need to do more research but will it affect me in the long run if i choose to get my ADN? i dont know if having a ADN over a BSN will make a difference hiring wise?

i am confused on how to get my lectures on line as it is now that i am a registered diploma student at all nurses.com institute.

Maybe I'm reading your post wrong. Do you think this website is a nursing school?

Oh, I think I see how you thought this, because of the "Allnurses.com University" forum? This is actually a great forum where nurses, students, etc, come and discuss (mostly) things relating to nursing, nursing schools, etc. I'm sorry if you thought otherwise.

Oh, and welcome to allnurses!

*** Southwest Technical College in Fennimore in Grant county has only a 1 or 2 semester wait list. They also have a part time evening and weekend program with no waiting list at all.
