Concordia College (NY) ABSN Fall 2010

U.S.A. New York

Anyone applying to Concordia's program in Bronxville, NY for the fall? Haven't seen a thread for it yet!

Well I had a phone interview because I live in Texas and they wanted me to interview the following week after they called me to say they wanted to interview me. It was very laid back. She asked me the general "why I wanted to be a nurse? Why now?" type questions and some specific to my case (like why I want to attend school/work in ny). The majority of the interview consisted of her telling me more about how things go in the program and answering a long list of questions I had. I sent in a personal statement with my application (though I don't think it was required) and wasn't told anything about a writing sample yet... Maybe that will be after I accept the admission offer?

Good luck on the interview!!!

The interview was very laid-back for me too. I happened to be in town that weekend from Massachusetts, so I did it in person.. again, she told me more than I told her. She even specified the beginning of the interview that this is nothing that I need to be worried about and that I can relax :)

I did the writing sample (Genuine, I guess you didn't have to do it because you weren't there in person? I doubt they'd make you do it now!) It was just an article, 1 page front and back, that I had to read and write a response on. It was a fully essay really, but they tell you EXACTLY what to write about. Like, part A, B, C, D and it's reallyyy straightforward. It took me about an hour to do, and there was no pressure or actual clock ticking.

Good luckk!

Thank you both--Genu9ine & WheresCara! I am so very nervous; I too sent in a personal statement along with my application package, and I really just assumed the writing eval was going to be scary or long, like a GRE format or something else unexpected. I am really going to calm myself down. And I can't thank you enough!! I really want to get into this program. Best of luck to you!:)

Hey guys! I just got my acceptance letter yesterday too! I applied late January and was interviewed 2 weeks ago. Cum GPA is 3.35 - I got an A in A&P 1 and 2. Chem 1, A and Chem 2, B+; although, I don't think Chem 2 is required. Microbiology, A.

Dr. Apold (Dean) is really nice. She's very approachable and really seem like she's very supportive of her students. She wants all of them to succeed in the program. My interview was very casual. She asked why nursing is the field I chose to get into, how the program will affect my life, if I get accepted in the program, etc. They want to know that you will not drop out in the middle of it for family/financial issues and that you are ready to commit yourself for 15 months. Then, she discussed thoroughly how the program works and how do-able it is. I took the writing sample. It's not rocket science. They'll give you an article and you have to write a response. This tests your ability to write a coherent, 5-paragraph essay and also tests your reading comprehension and reasoning abilities. It's pretty straight forward. I met one of the professors too, by accident, because there was a fire drill in the middle of my writing sample lol. They're all nice and accomodating. The program is pretty new. Fall 2010 students will be the third class coming in. But I know some people who graduated the first class and some who are currently in the program. They are all doing well and they have great things to say about it. 2 of my friends took the NCLEX for the first time and passed it. So, I am pretty confident about my decision in applying to this school. I hope this helps :)

PS: Congrats to all who got in! I hope I'll get to see you guys in the Fall! :)

Congrats! I have an interview in 2 weeks, I was wondering what to expect, and also how was the writing eval portion, if you've done this already?

You will be fine! I'd say just be yourself and answer the questions as real as possible. Relax and just assure them this is something you really want to do and that you are ready to commit yourself to this program for 15 months. Basic questions like why you nursing? why this school? etc. If you want you can review some interview questions and practice. That helped me get over the anxiety. Good luck :)

I just found out that I'm accepted to Concordia's 15-month program starting this fall. I saw the school two times and it's really beautiful... it has a quaint, intimate feeling that you don't really get from a city school, and the people seem really nice. From what I gather there are actually only 4 professors, who teach all of the on-campus classes. This doesn't include the clinicals, where you have hospital professionals teaching you. The woman who interviewed me stressed the fact that they really do whatever it takes to help you get through the program because they want you to succeed.

The one concern I have is my social environment. My interviewer said that many people are here starting their second career, maybe in their 30s or older. I'm just graduating college this spring. I think that a mix of ages is a good thing and I enjoy being around people in different stages in their career. I'm wondering though how many people in my class will be around my age group. If 10 of the 40 accepted are just out of college, I would be happy with that. I don't have any statistics though and wonder whether I'd be the only one?? If anyone has insight into this please let me know. (aka: people on this post, are you recent graduates or on your second career?)

Thanks in advance!

First, congrats! I just turned 25 this year and graduated 2 years ago. I hope this helps :)

congrats ynabean on the acceptance!!!

i'm still waiting to hear from more schools before i make a decision on Concordia

Ynabeana, congratulations on your acceptance!! Thank you so much, like Genu9ine and WheresCara you have helped me calm down a bit; I've been anxious about the writing sample & interview. But I will take your tips & review some interview questions, etc.

thanks.. what other schools did you apply to genu9ine

ynabeana

I applied to NYU, Georgetown, Loyola-Chicago, and Thomas Jefferson. I have an interview later this month at Georgetown, but I haven't heard anything from any of the other schools yet.

Hey I live in texas too. I am already in the program in Houston but it is a long wait. I am just worn out of taking courses after courses that I do not even need. I also applied at Stony Brook for 2 years program. Any suggestion for any other school?

This is a great website, if you're starting off from scratch:

www.aacn.nche.edu/Education/pdf/APLIST.PDF

It's a list of all the accelerated bachelor's nursing programs in the country in 2009. It's possible that it's missing a few, but it's a good place to start!

Random question, but can someone tell me how to START a thread on Allnurses? I thought I checked all over the website and can't figure it out... Thanks!
