Anyone applying to Concordia's program in Bronxville, NY for the fall? Haven't seen a thread for it yet!
That's a big jump in numbers, but I'm sure that the number of people applying increased as well so its par for the course. How did you go about buying books? Did you rent or buy new? Are books available to be purchased from students in previous classes? Also what other type of equipment do we have to buy aside from the scrubs and about how much does it all come out to? Thanks again for all of the info - you've been extremely helpful.
For the first semester, I tried to buy all of them used. It came out to be almost $900. I didnt know that I can rent them so when you get the book list do your research and see what's cheaper. I rent at bookrenter.com or chegg.com. Our class will be willing to sell some books too. I'm sure we can arrange a book sale for you guys or something :) There are just a few books that are worth buying like Med surg, pharmacology book, etc. Besides the scrubs, you will need approved nursing shoes, sthethoscope, and a pen light. The dont allow sneakers. One, it's because we all have to look professional wearing our uniforms because we're representing the school.. Two, you just don't know what you'll encounter in clinicals. And honestly, you will thank them later on for it haha. You dont want any bodily fluids on your nice shoes. We also have to buy a name tag as part of our uniform and that was like $10 or $15. Our scrubs were a little over a $100 per pair. I heard they're trying to find a cheaper company for you. Our scrubs are blue. I dont mind it. You can buy your sthethoscope anywhere. It coud be whatever color you want. I bought a nice one at allheart.com they have a good selection there for a lot cheaper than retail price! You can even have your initials or name engraved. I had mine engraved b/c some of us have similar ones and that can easily be lost or stolen. Plus, it looks cool :) Sthethoscopes can be pricey too. But there are good littman sthethoscoe for $65. Id suggest to invest in a good one because it will help you during your physical assessments. Sonetimes it's hard to hear on the cheap ones. Any littman sthethoscopes are good anyway so shop around first :)
Ps: you also need a blood pressure cuff. It'll be useful in physical assessment class since you will be practicing all the time but you really won't need it in clinicals. It's good to buy it now and practice over the summer. There are some good videos on youtube teaching you how to do it.
We have a few people that babysit for a few hours. But nothing more than 10-15 hours per week. The program is pretty intense. It's hard to hold a job while you're in it. Especially changes in the schedule may happen the very last minute. Be prepared to read and know 3-5 chapters the least for one class per week. Sometimes even more depending on your teacher/class. You're first semester is the hardest because you're still adjusting to the new lifestyle (and to this whole new level of studying!! Lol). But, once you get the hang of things and figure out your routine you should be okay.. I'm sure Dr. **** mentioned that you really can't work while you're in this program. In my opinion, try realllyyyyy not to. But I know it's hard to swallow it at first because of bills, expenses etc. But if you really can not not have a job, I'd suggest no more than 15 hours per week (even that's pushing it) because you don't want to be behind with school work. OR maybe you can wait and see how the program is like for the first semester. This way you already have an idea on how you're day/week will be like. This is what my husband told me last year...that I'm now I'm a full-time student and a per diem wife. LOL because even when I'm at home.. I'm still studying!!! Everything will go fast though. I can't believe we're half way done!

I live in the Bronx so my commute is not bad. It pretty much takes me 20 mins to get to school. Although I know some students who live in Queens, Long Island, Manhattan and Connecticut and they all drive to school. They pretty much can manage because they are going against traffic in the morning. It might suck during clinicals because at most sites were expected to be there by 7am. There are days when we come to school later though. I dont know how they are going to arrange your classes since there are more of you this year. Our class started with 39 and I heard your class have 63 students coming in..
