U.S.A. California

Anyone going to Pasadena City College or Glendale Community College? I am returning to school. I am 54 and have just begun to do the pre- reqs for the nursing program. (Nothing older than 10 years count so I must repeat everything.) Hopefully by Summer 2009 I will have succeded in finishing off the pre reqs and can apply for the nursing program and enter the "lottery". Has anyone waited for the lottery and how long did they wait...geeez I am 54!!! Thanks! :D

I am deeply sorry if I caused any offense. :redpinkhe There is much of the history that I felt I needed to collapse to get it all into a single brief post.

As you say, everyone is different and many people do not conform to an ethnic, social, or economic "profile." But I believe that most readers will understand that I was attempting to be sympathetic while communicating the actual history of how the community college lotteries came to be.

Again, I apologize to you (and any others) if what I said created offense. Racial and ethnic matters are perhaps too sensitive a matter for my clumsy fingers to type about. :typing

NO, I am sorry maybe I took it the wrong way:heartbeat, but what you said was true, and i mean the more diverse programs are the better right? right!

well i am glad that you got the message out and i appreciate it, i wasn't getting after you, maybe is that i just realized how poor i really am. :scrying:

My thesis paper in my summer Nursing History class was about how we must have diversity in nursing so that we don't become stagnant in our methods, beliefs, and aspirations for both the "craft" and "profession" of nursing. Nursing is a "big tent" with room for everyone!

It may seem paradoxical, but the issue of diversity is why I support the admission lottery for community college nursing programs. I can't accept homogeneity...it is our differences that make us strong. (Full disclosure: I'm a white male nearing 50.)

By the way, you can get loads of money to attend the university. Many of the students in my cohort come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. If you can get into a merit-based 4-year nursing school, you probably qualify for the CalGrant 'C' and/or State University Grant (you may only use one or the other if you qualify for both). I used to receive the Pell Grant until my son turned 24. I get Stafford sub & unsub loans. And I work full time at a good-paying job. I won't bore you with my financial circumstances, I'm just telling you that, depending on your family's circumstances, you might fare better at the upper division than in a CC program. It's worth checking into.

Best of luck to you!!! :loveya:

YES!:up::up::up:

I TOTALLY agree that nursing should be more diverse. and that is good that CC's are doing a lottery because if you think about it, poor people (myself) go to a or have gone to a community college because they are way cheaper than putting thousands of $ a semester when CC's have a $1,000 (if that) a year or so. there is a big difference between a semester and a years worth of money,

so i mean that is where everyone goes not only poor people but everyone, it just appeals to the more financially disadvantaged people [sorry for my use of the word poor] BUT...

Lotteries tend to only randomly select most of the time, the con to that (besides the huge pro being diversity) it takes a lot of time and patience, there could be many people who would have been very gifted in this profession but never got to it because of waiting years on a waitlist.

but other than that those are the 2 many points with it

as i have stated somewhere in another thread, i have been that person to be waitlisted, PCC (pasadena city college) would'nt let me start the program until 2010 IF I GET PICKED. it was ridiculous that is why i said screw it and went to a private college

and although it is expensive i going to looking for scholarships, grants, federal aid [thanks btw] and everything to see if i can get something to pay at least most of it or even 1/2, crap i will take a 1/4 of it at this point. if i have to then student loans it is!!!

i dont think anyone should be discouraged by brains or money to get into a school

to anyone out there with this problem, if you dont want to be waitlisted then i would strongly reccommend CSU or a private, it will cost, but at least it will get you to where you want to be faster than waiting blindly....

Actually, lottery systems for nursing programs are not widely used. Mt. Sac is the only one that I know of. I just got in. I think it is great because it only took a year to get in, not 3-5 years, like every other communithy college nursing school in the area. oh, yeah, they don't turn out stupid nurses either. Their nclex score os 96%. just because you get a C in one of your prerequisite classes doesn't mean you are stupid and should loose 3-5 years of your life waiting to get into a nursing school. the only reason I had to go onto waiting lists is because it was super hard for me to study with a toddler crawling all over me. Now that my son is more grown up, it will be easier to study; also, I have a great support system.

yeah, as far as i know, the san diego area community colleges don't have lotteries. if i'm wrong, please correct me and tell me where. i would like to test my luck!

Goldenwest and Cerritos are also lottery.
