Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) Accelerated May 2022 Start

Published

Hey all,

I loved coming here when I was searching my nursing programs and looking at others experience in the application process.  I have not seen any posts yet for CCPs upcoming accelerated nursing class.  So here I am starting a post so people applying or those who have already been accepted can start to meet each other and offer advice.

I just got my acceptance letter and cannot wait to get started! Class of 2023!

Has anyone else applied for the May 2024 start date? I'm curious if you've received an admissions decision, and if it came via snail mail or email. I took my Kaplan nursing entrance exam at CCP on October 16 and I am sooooo eager to hear back. Thanks!

I applied end of October, waiting for Kaplan test date. Others have heard back Jan/feb I think, unless you applied for early decision maybe ?

Thanks! Good luck with the exam! Ugh, I was aiming to apply for the early deadline, and then they told me I needed to retake high school biology because it had been just over 10 years ? so I ended up applying in early September, a couple weeks after the early application date. I'm hoping to hear sooner for that reason? I know they accept folks on a rolling basis... but who knows! The website doesn't provide much intel.

Ugh that's frustrating! It sounds like they are in the very beginning of reviewing stuff since you just took your test. So hopefully soon. Can I ask, how was the Kaplan test? I have the practice book but would love more insight on the science section (as I'm nervous ?).

I checked out two practice books from the Philly Free Library:

- Nursing School Entrance Exams (Kaplan)

- KNAT: full study guide for the Kaplan Nursing Admission Test

I didn't very thoroughly review either of them, mostly just looked at the science and math sections the night before the exam (one of them had a whole vocab / spelling section that is NOT on the exam, so don't waste your time). I also found a couple practice tests online via Smart Edition Media, and watched some of their YouTube videos! There are also some good flash card sets on Quizlet.

The science section is only 20 multiple choice questions, I don't remember any chemistry, mostly A&P and maybe a couple general biology questions... I would focus on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems! Some of the YouTube videos highlight this, but for example, know the order of operations for how blood moves into and out of the heart (they might ask a question about a specific valve within the sequence, etc). know how a breath cycle works and the anatomy and physiology of the airways and lungs. There were maybe one or two questions about specific hormones?

I had a total score of 95. At the end of the exam, it also shows you which questions you answered correctly/incorrectly in each section. Based on CCP's website it sounds like they take the composite score (average of your reading, writing, and math sections) and want that to be 70 or higher, but they maintain the ability to consider your science score when making admissions decisions? I got 16 out of 20 science questions correct, it was my lowest score of the sections.

95! You go! That's something to be proud of. Thank you for the resources, honestly that's more than any other post has been able to offer. I also read about the composite score bit so I believe you're right ?. IDK if you saw above but ---------------------------- had good insight regarding the schedule and work/life balance. I found it very helpful as the website is a little brief for my taste. Sending you good vibes and keep us posted on acceptance ??

Thank you so much! Yes, any additional crumb of info I can find feels like a treasure haha. Best of luck to you, too!

Any news back regarding admission? Just finished the entrance exam, got an 89 (85 for overall composite). I'm feeling okay about it ?‍♀️

Congrats! Ugh, honestly it's been such a nightmare dealing with this program! They have messed up my transcript evaluation twice now, and keep bouncing me around to different people and departments to try and resolve the issue. I've been conditionally accepted pending some of that being sorted out. They also just informed me that I need to retake high school algebra, which I'm frustrated about because they never flagged that in previous transcript evaluations! Back in August they told me that my only outstanding prerequisite was to retake high school biology. They informed me that once I completed the bio course, thereby fulfilling the highschool requirements, I would be scheduled for the Kaplan exam. So it's wild to me that nobody mentioned I also need to retake math, if that was also a highschool requirement, and a prerequisite to moving forward in the application process and taking the entrance exam??? I'm so frustrated because I also scored 100% on the math section of the Kaplan exam. I doubt algebra 2 will be super relevant to the program. I feel like they've made a lot of oversights and errors throughout this process, and nobody is consistent with what they're telling me, and none of it aligns with the information on their website. I keep trying to get on the phone with folks and they won't give me office numbers. It's unclear if I have time to take the algebra course at CCP this semester because nobody will answer my questions. I applied to "challenge" the requirement by taking a department exam instead, but need to be approved to do so. I guess that might be my only option at this point - teaching myself math and hoping for the best on the exam LOL. In the meantime, the transcript office is saying they approved all my biology prerequisites and the nursing program is saying they weren't approved by the transcript office, so WHO KNOWS!? Sigh. I hope you have a smoother time and just get accepted without any hiccups! I'm seriously considering all my options at this point, I'm just so tired of the runaround.

Thanks! And OMG, that sounds like the worst. Tbh I had a terrible experience at the testing center earlier this month and left in tears. I've attended CCP before and I'll just say....it's not always great but boy is it cheap LOL ?. For the prereq issues and timing, I'm taking an outstanding prereq (nutrition) in the Spring and ASN admissions agreed to that in writing so there may be time for your math course. Totally understand the frustration, this process is already complicated enough! IDK if maybe this program is still considered newer and they're working out the kinks or what. If you're okay with sharing, where else are you looking? I checking into MCCC and DCCC and both are okay options. I just hate the added curriculum (sociology/psych) and the general consensus that taking those classes while taking nursing classes is impossible. So tempted to say **** it and apply to ABSN programs.

Also have you used the CCP employee directory to find numbers/emails? That's how I've been tracking people down (mainly financial aid ?).

Woof, I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. I had a moment of panic at the testing center because they weren't sure if I registered in the correct "new" link? Luckily it worked out, but it was definitely not the energy I wanted to carry into an exam! It's great to hear that you're taking a course this Spring and they're cool with that - who provided the approval in writing? The select program email address is clearly sick of me, they keep passing me off to random professors hahaha. But it would be nice to know who is actually in charge of things or making these decisions. I just want a little transparency! Now they're saying that if the challenge exam doesn't work out and I need to take the course in the Spring that's fine, but that I may as well take a higher level math course if I want to pursue my BSN someday. I'm assuming that would be stats based on the prerequisites for ABSN programs... I am also still considering applying to Jefferson, their app isn't due until Feb 15 and all I would need is the statistics class. I really don't want to take on a ton of debt right now, which was why I had picked the CCP route, and the idea of not being able to work part-time outside of school for a year is also stressful. But it would be nice to be in a program where people respond to my emails! LOL. I haven't looked into the other community colleges - I took many of my prerequisites at Bucks County Community College though because I was living up there at the time. Now that I'm back in Philly, I hadn't really considered that option. I also wanted a program that was more accelerated (either ASN or ABSN). But my limited experience at BCCC was pretty positive, especially when it came to communicating with the admissions and transcript offices. I saw your other comment about the employee directory, thank you for sharing! The guy I'm currently emailing with (---------------------------) doesn't have a number listed there, but I will keep this tool in mind for whoever I have to pester next ?
