I am also a very shy person, however for some reason when I am working its different I can go into a patients room and talk to them and their families without any difficulties. Outside of work i am still quiet, but when i get into my "professional arena" it just comes to me. Hopefully as your confidence increases with your knowledge base the same will happen with you.

i am a first year nursing student and i was just looking to get a little advice and input from some of you all who have a great deal of experience with this profession...i am typically a pretty shy person (not a great character trait to have in this profession, i know), and my biggest obstacle right now is communication with my patients and others that i encounter in the hospital. does anyone have any advice on how to improve preofessional communication skills and get over that initial nervousness that i have?
thanks!
hello and to allnurses.com
obviously you have overcome some of your shyness and/or nervousness because you have started the nursing program. that takes alot of nerve to do that. congrats.
i think as time goes by, you will develop those communication skills a little better. just takes time. as the poster stated above, you get into "patient" mode and that shy characteristic just fades.......
