Common illnesses and conditions

What are some common illnesses and conditions you see working on the medical ward every day?

Cardiac, usually A fib, either new onset or RVR. or any other funky beats that people do, if you have cardiac on your floor.

CHF, pnuemonia, cellulitis, DVT, PE, syncope, abdominal pain/sbo (this could possibly be surgical). diverticulitis, chest pain, but again could be a cardiac floor, acute or chronic renal failure, fever of unknown origin.

I know there are more, but those are the ones that come to my mind at the present.

All the above plus altered mental status, s/p fall, trauma, MVA, diabetic complications, suicide attempt, ETOH intoxication, TIA, stroke, UTI, s/p cath lab...

I am on an ICU step-down unit though. I never know where to post...we are pretty much med-surg, just a bit higher acuity level and with telemetry. We don't do a lot of ortho postops on my floor but we get s/p CABG and such. I read this forum because a lot of it pertains to what I do. Not sure if all the stuff we see gets seen on med-surg or not.

On my unit at a very large hospital we see a variety, such as:

Lap/ open choleys

Post-op whipples

Post-op liver resections

Post-op colon resections with colostomies/ileostomies

Post-op DIEP flaps

Mastectomies

Total gastrectomies

Abscess & bile drain placements

GJ tube placements

Incisional & ventral hernia repairs
