Columbus New Grad - need help finding job :(

Published

Hey all!

It's been a while since I've been on this site but I definitely remember how this site helped me through my crappy nursing school days so I don't doubt it will help me now.

Currently, I am a graduated Kent State University nursing student May 2008 who originally planned to move to CA so I initially tried to pursue a CA license when I realized that was not what I wanted (I won't go into the love story behind that:loveya:...unless if you wanna know). So anyhow, I had to reapply to Ohio and I just received my ATT and am scheduled to take my test Sept 23rd. I have applied to so many jobs in Columbus (where I just moved) and have received nothing back. I really wanted to work at Nationwide for my interest in children, but they said their waiting list might take up to 6 months for new grads! In that case, I have applied to Riverside and OSU MC mostly and I think one position at Mt Carmel, but I am really just stumped on what to do. I hate this post grad/pre big kid stage right now because I am unemployed and have every day to just stress about my future.

Please either a. Give me advice on a job b. Make me feel better about being the last one of my group of graduate friends to be working as an RN...even worse...not even licensed yet.

Thanks!

Erin

I too am in the position as you. Only I have my License I just took a job at a nursing home. Only to find out that is really not where I want to be. All the stories I have heard about nursing homes are true at least at this one. I think I came home crying the 1st night I was there. I do know that Ohio Health will have some jobs next month for New grads but they wont start until jan 2009. I also have been trying to get on at Childrens I applied back in Feb when the New grad jobs 1st posted; From what I have heard is that they didnt take any of the New Grads!!! I have a friend who is a RN there and she was very lucky to get a job( she was a unit clerk). Her thought is they arent going to be doing a lot of hiring until the new Hospital is done. I will keep you posted on anything that I may hear and wish you a lot of luck.

Bummer! Well I take my test tomorrow and when I pass I am just going to go to hospitals and demand a job. I don't want to work in a nursing home either :( sorry about your experience. I would rather wait around and be unemployed or just work a lifeguarding job somewhere. Anyhow...good luck with your nursing career. I hope you find what you want soon!

Hey my place is hiring and they will pay you 22 an hour until you pass Nclex in springfield oh 1 hr away from columbus, sign on is 3k and taxed to death contract 1 year, Springfield Regional Medical Center, but the drive from columbus is an hour and icy during winter. Is Columbus not hiring at all?

Hey! Well so far online I have heard NOTHING. I did just pass my NClex so got that sucker out of the way  and next week I plan on getting a copy of my degree and the fact that I am a registered nurse and do some personal searching for a job. If I honestly have zero luck I will look into that job. Thank you for the info! If they want any contact info next time you go just let me know. I am looking into anything and extremely anxious to begin nursing!

Did you have any particular units that you liked where you did a clinical rotation? I did, so when it was time to graduate, I found the number of the nurse manager and called her up. She was very friendly, happy to talk to me, and ended up offering an interview. I got the job! That is how all 3 new grads on my unit got jobs (this past spring). I would try something like that--it definitely can't hurt!!

What unit are you on? I really enjoyed working with children but the children's hospital in columbus kept reminding me they are not hiring new grads anytime soon. Other than that, I guess I can work med-surg or somethin just to get some experience and diversity in nursing. I've never been one to be like "Oh I like neuro..." or "Er is great!"..I just want to take care of people no matter what the situation is as long as it doesn't overwhelm me so much at first.

There is NO shortage of nurses right now in Columbus. Columbus is actually saturated with nurses at the moment. I just found this out from both an advisor and human resource personel. I know that some offices are hiriing new grads but hospitals are not short on people trying to get nursing jobs. Apparently if you want a job in nursing you have to move away from Columbus (figures I move here and go to school and they tell me to move back home lol) A friend of mine graduated last may and it took him MONTHS to find a job. My husband knows the HR person from Grant and she said the same thing. No one is really hiring and if they are you have to have experience before they will consider you. Also the woman I work for now (she does the hiring a a clinic in GroveCity) explained to me that the health care field takes a long time to get into in comparison to other jobs. It can be a matter of months before you find out if you are hired. I was just on Mount Carmels webpage today and they had a bunch of posted job openings... And my neighbor told me to try usajobs.gov Its the website for DFSC and DLA. She said the VA is always hiring....

I have a lot of hope that I will get a job somehow. I mean even if CBus is saturated with nurses, apparently nurses are retiring earlier now and if they know what is best they will have plenty of nurses ready for a projected bigger shortage of nurses. My boyfriend's mom is a nurse as OSU med center and shw works so much overtime because of the nursing shortage. I'm sure a lot of factors play into getting an available job, but this site has also informed me that if you keep trying, you will find the right job...so whether it is an hour drive away or right down the street, I'm hoping it's the right one!:D

I agree. I have faith that we will all find a job. If not our "dream" job at first, it will come! I sure as hell am not leaving Columbus! We love it here!

what the heck is with osu?

I graduated from there and they won't consider me for a job.

HEllo

did anyone hear of anything good and sensible in Hocking Hills area.:heartbeat

I love columbus too! I just moved here a month ago and I am originally from a small town in Ohio right outside Pittsburgh and I went to school in Kent so I've experience Cleveland and I feel like Cbus is spread out just enough to not get so irritated with traffic and it isn't as congested. Plus you have OSU football (hopin for a better season than how we've started lol) and better weather than NE Ohio. So have you found a job then in Columbus?
