Hi everyone!
First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who has been accepted into the next starting cohort for this program!
I am starting this super early because I have already begun to freak out lol.
Is anyone applying for the MDE MDE/DNP or MDE/PHD program for 2017?
This is my dream program !!
I am prepping for the GRE at this point which I am taking in August. It has been a long arduous road for me to say the least and I am ready to send my app off with a prayer. Any advice from current/previous students of this program or applicants welcome! And to my fellow applicants what other programs are you applying to? And most importantly good luck to everyone. The application opens August of 2016
Submit a Columbia University review today!
You can review your school as a Student, Alumni, Parent, Pre-Student, Employee, or Other. Act fast, winners will be announced next
Anyone submit a fee waiver request for the application? The website says to submit it to the Office of Admissions but it doesn't specify if it's via email or by mail.
Also, does anyone know if submitting after the priority deadline affects us? Or what is the point of the earlier deadline in the first place?
Don't know about the fee waiver. The office is pretty responsive, though. I would try email and they will let you know if it's otherwise. Or just call them.
Submitting earlier is better. They kind of implied in the info sessions that though they didn't make official decisions before the deadline, they do start looking at apps. so sometimes the committee has "a picture in their heads" of what the class looks like before the final deadline rolls around. That's not really an official statement, but just something to keep in mind.
Hi everyone! Right now I'm in the processing of applying for both the MDE/DNP- psychiatric/mental health specialty. It's definitely both exciting and nerve-wracking as I'm sure most of you can relate!
I do have a question for anyone who may be in the same boat. I'm taking the GRE today (and freaking out), but I know we don't get our writing scores for another 2 weeks. On the application itself there is a spot for our score, but I really wanted to send out the application today or tomorrow, I'm getting antsy about it. Did you guys wait until you received your final score, or just submitted the app without it/edited it? Thank you in advance!

I hope the GRE went well!
It's probably best to email the SON office directly with your question. They are really helpful and nice. I turned in my application and had a question about my GRE scores being marked as incomplete. They had an answer for me within a few hours.
How long did it take you to do your pre-reqs? I have a background in Communications and need to take pretty much all of the pre-reqs. I had taken a masters course in statistics years ago but it seems they won't accept it because it's been more than 5 years. I'm dreading that one! Statistics wasn't easy.

I'm from a non-science/healthcare discipline as well. I've been chipping away at mine when I have the time -- basically one class at a time, sometimes in shorter semesters, or online. All told, it will take me two years, including some pre-reqs for the pre reqs (I took Biology and Algebra to get better foundations in science and math). Columbia's pre reqs are pretty minimal compared to other programs; I have to take other classes (like Chemistry, ack!) before I'll be ready to apply to other schools.
Columbia doesn't require pre reqs to be completed before applying -- only by the start of the program. But they told me that for people without a science background, they want some sciences completed so they can gauge proficiency.
I actually had a great experience with stats, and I'm no math whiz. I had a good teacher who presented the info quite clearly. He was a spacial organizer and a method-follower, and that approach really worked for the material. I definitely made sure to take that class in person though. Hopefully you can have a similarly good experience!
hey everyone! some advice please--
So I got my GRE score back and now I'm debating retaking it. Long story short I only had about a week/week and a half to study for it, my verbal and writing scores are decent but my quant score was 151 which apparently this year equals 43rd percentile, unfortunately (I know most of the schools I'm sure we're all applying to recommend at least 50th percentile... ugh). I really don't want to retake it because it's expensive and honestly I don't want to waste more time studying for it or put myself through another 5 hours of getting my brain fried but regardless, the stress is still there that my quant score will hold me back... any thoughts or input?? Thanks!

Well I'm impressed! I studied for the damn thing for months and didn't do nearly as well as I wanted in math either. I decided to just let it ride, and hope that it will be offset by my good verbal/writing scores, and the rest of my application portfolio. The admissions team has said the GRE is only a small part of what they consider when evaluating a candidate. If they truly take a holistic approach, that score shouldn't impact us much, right? There is no way I'm putting myself through another five hours of mental marathoning in pursuit of another point or two.
I've also heard that the GRE percentiles are tougher to hit for math -- because there are so many non-native English speakers who take it and do incredible on math, but bomb the verbal. Whereas native English speakers can do well on verbal and so-so on math. So math gets skewed higher with less disparity between the two. Not that it helps anything...other than my bruised math ego.
I don't know whether you should retake, but if you do, study with Magoosh. That site is amazing and I did a lot better than anticipated on math because of drilling a million sample problems and watching their videos. Keep in mind you can only retake once every 20+ days as well, in case that impacts your decision.

I finished the video essay portion, and just to clarify if anyone is wondering: the two minutes you are given to answer run concurrently, so if your answer to the first question runs a tiny bit long, you won't get cut off or anything. If they both run long, you're screwed.
Good luck to everyone finishing up, and now starting the long wait!
