Columbia University MDE 2017

Published

Hi everyone!

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who has been accepted into the next starting cohort for this program! :D

I am starting this super early because I have already begun to freak out lol.

Is anyone applying for the MDE MDE/DNP or MDE/PHD program for 2017?

This is my dream program !!

I am prepping for the GRE at this point which I am taking in August. It has been a long arduous road for me to say the least and I am ready to send my app off with a prayer. Any advice from current/previous students of this program or applicants welcome! And to my fellow applicants what other programs are you applying to? And most importantly good luck to everyone. The application opens August of 2016 :D

Hi Everyone! I'm finishing up my application. Starting to get really excited/nervous, as this is my dream program. I'm taking the GRE soon, but my practice tests have not been up to par. Verbal I scored around 160 but Quantitative 149 (my weakest point). I have a 4.0 GPA, my major was Communications and Media, and hopefully some strong recommendations from my professors. I intend to complete most of the prerequisites in the spring semester since I am graduating early with my bachelor's in December.

Any thoughts on my chances? Do you think low GRE's as well as a total change in career path will preclude my application from acceptance? I wish I had taken more of the necessary prerequisites during my regular undergrad to prove I could cut it with the sciences, but I just wanted to get this bachelor's out of the way as quickly as possible so that I could move on to the graduate studies I really want to pursue.

FYI, applying for the MDE-DNP with the PMHNP specialty. I am very interested in mental health, and took a lot of psychology courses during undergrad including experimental, statistics for behavioral science, abnormal, and intro psychology.

Any tips/advice would be so much appreciated!

hey everyone! some advice please--

So I got my GRE score back and now I'm debating retaking it. Long story short I only had about a week/week and a half to study for it, my verbal and writing scores are decent but my quant score was 151 which apparently this year equals 43rd percentile, unfortunately (I know most of the schools I'm sure we're all applying to recommend at least 50th percentile... ugh). I really don't want to retake it because it's expensive and honestly I don't want to waste more time studying for it or put myself through another 5 hours of getting my brain fried but regardless, the stress is still there that my quant score will hold me back... any thoughts or input?? Thanks!

seriously you did a great job,my scores where horrible had an accident on my way so i was so tensed, had 144, and 140 so can you imagine that? but am applying anyway

Thanks for the affirmation Chiamaka! And oh no, I'm so sorry that happened to you.. but I'm sure you'll be fine! I think we're all really banking on the fact that they take a holistic look at each application :)

eta410, my GRE is around the same so we're in the same boat! And I haven't taken A&P yet and am currently taking microbio so I haven't really demonstrated my aptitude in the hard sciences, either. But hopefully we'll be okay :) Your GPA is exemplary, I'm impressed!

Chiamaka oh, no I'm sorry! But yes I think I am going to apply anyway no matter what the scores. I just hope my essay and the rest of my application will balance that section out. Fingers crossed we'll be ok!!!

raellagr that's good to hear! Aw thanks!

Where are you taking your prereqs? Has anyone taken the online accelerated nursing prereq courses from University of Rochester?

When I attended the info session, someone asked what the most important part of the application was...grades, experience, GRE, etc. Jose replied that it was the personal statement essay. He said that is what they put the most weight on, and it can help a borderline application tip over into the yes pile.

So with that in mind, I worked really hard on mine -- I had multiple people read it, and spent about two weeks editing and crafting it as best I could. I tried to really frame my own personal story for the committee, show what I could bring to the cohort that would be unique and worthwhile, and also show why I want to pursue my nursing degree at Columbia SON. It seems like that is what they are looking for.

So I say definitely go for it and see what happens! All you have to lose is time, $65, and possibly some hair from all the waiting. Sheesh...February is a really long time from now.

I'm taking my prereqs at community colleges in San Diego! I wish I could just do them online but a couple schools I'm applying to require labs.. sigh.

Also, the first essay for me is kind of tough because it feels like all the questions are so impersonal. (and also, you're trying to cram so many questions into two short pages....) Answering the first two questions honestly seem like I'm writing an essay for school.. the last two questions allow you to get a little more personal but I feel like I didn't really have space to develop my story or really show who I am, especially since the first two questions already take up precious space. Anyone have any tips on how to approach this??

raellagr I completely agree! Was just stressing over this. I want to get personal and relate my story, but yet I feel that I need to answer the questions in an informed way. Anyone have any tips?

Two pages is definitely not much room! My first draft ran over by a good half page. I tried to think of the essay as a blended topic: what is it about me and my story/skills that is a good fit for my chosen specialty, for Columbia and for the higher education that the SON offers. I started off more personal and then moved toward discussion of the more generic prompts later. I figured -- who wants to read a boring paragraph about higher education right off the bat? People are going to want to hear about the person behind the words first.

@girlhasnoname, that is great advice! Thank you :)
