Hey everyone. I was just wondering who applied to Columbia University's ETP program.
I got an email today telling me to keep logging into the website where I applied to check on the status of my application. Has anyone else got this email? And does anyone know approximately when they begin to post decisions?
I'm nervous as this was my #2 school.
Yes that's correct. If you drop below 'half-time' status then you will have to start paying back your loans. (Usually that would be taking only 1 class. .maybe 2, depends on the number of units and what the school considers half and full time). You do have the 6 month grace period. On unsubsidized and private loans, the interest will continue to accrue as soon as you are given the loan. Does anyone else have school loans already ?!. .because I sure do so I'm definitely nervous about the cost.y:cry:
I was accepted to Columbia and Northeastern. I'm definitely leaning towards Columbia unless Northeastern gives me a fabulous scholarship hehe. I'll definitely be at Visitor's Day!
Does anyone know/have a breakdown of costs for the master's portion? Knowing this is crucial to figuring out total costs, but I'm having trouble getting a straight answer from Financial Aid.
hey WannabePNP! i also called Columbia FinAid today, asking about the cost of the last 1.5-2 years of the program and the woman i spoke to told me it varies, depends on your specialty, but that it's in the ballpark of $35-40K/yr
did you finally decide on whether you're gonna go with Columbia or Yale? although yale has smaller class sizes and is somewhat cheaper than columbia, I'm pretty sure I'm going with Columbia because of the accessibility of transportation and its location...

Hey CaliforniaGirl - thanks so much for the info. I myself am leaning towards Yale, but I'm still planning on attending Visiting Day at Columbia. I feel much more acquainted right now with Yale than I do with Columbia, partially b/c Yale had an interview day and partially b/c when I visited Columbia the first time I did not have the opportunity to meet any faculty/current students. I just can't figure out why (cost of living aside) Columbia is so much more expensive. As for location, in many ways I'd definitely prefer NYC over New Haven, so I know where you're coming from there. But in the end, I think for me it's more about the strength of the program. Yale is #1 for peds NP (according to US News, but take that for what it's worth), and from the interview day my impression was indeed that their peds specialty is quite strong. Also, I've definitely gotten a much more positive impression of the Yale administration so far in their clarity, responsiveness, etc. than I have from Columbia. However, as I mentioned I haven't had the chance to meet/interact with any Columbia faculty, which is why I feel I need to attend Visiting Day. I do know a few people who are currently at Columbia and overall are happy with the program. But unless I am blown away by Columbia on Visiting Day, I feel like I'll more likely end up at Yale.
Good luck, whichever school you choose!
Hi all!
I can't believe that I JUST now found this thread. I've been reading the threads from last year and wondered why there wasn't a current one going.
First of all - CONGRATULATIONS!
A little about me, as I'm a few months behind on the meet-n-greet...
I was accepted into the CNM program at Columbia.
I currently live in Oregon.
I applied to OHSU last year, made it on the waitlist and reapplied this year only to not even make it to an interview!
I was going to apply to UCSF, but screwed up my notation of the deadline and missed it by 10 days. Am interested to hear from anyone who got in.
I applied to UCDenver, as well and am supposed to hear about my status in March. However, I've decided on Columbia - especially since I have already submitted my $500 and acceptance confirmation. And I haven't even gotten my financial aid package yet (I didn't submit my FAFSA until after the first of Feb).
I will be attending the Visitor's Day and am very excited to meet up with all of you!
I am so incredibly excited about moving to NYC, but extremely terrified as well as my notions of the city are based on TV, movies and general stereotypes. What an amazing opportunity to be able to move across the country and receive such a prestigious education!
I am also extremely worried about funding my education. I have no qualms about applying for and paying loans back. What I am concerned about is being approved for such large loans.
I've read responses in regards to the calculation of tuition, fees, etc. and I still have some questions. Someone mentioned that there were 66 credits at $1100/credit. Was this total or per year? Or just for pre-licensure? I read the 2008-2010 School of Nursing Bulletin that showed the CNM program credits at 54. I also read something on the website that mentioned pre-licensure and 60 credits. So doing the math, 60 credits at $1,084/credit (undergraduate per the financial aid website) = $65,040 for pre-licensure (2009-2010); $1,375 (MS Clinical Courses - not sure how many apply in this category, so I'm going to assume all of them for the purposes of calculations) x 54 credits = $74,250 for MS specialty portion (2010-2012). Estimated total: $139,290.
I know there's a School of Nursing scholarship that is about $30,000 and I also read it's broken into two payments - one portion during the last two semesters of the pre-licensure portion and the last portion upon the start of the MS portion. Does that mean that the first 2 semesters of the program (assuming a 4 term/semester year), we don't receive assistance?
Also, I've seen so many estimates of the cost of living. Someone here mentioned $35,000/year and I read on another website $11,000/term (x 4 terms = $44,000 the first year and $33,000/yr the last two). When applying for a private student loan, how do you know how much you should apply for? Do you have to apply for the amount you are going to need total? Or do you apply every year? I know these are a lot of questions, and I know many of you have these too. I'm sure they will all get answered on the 6th of March, but I wanted to throw them out just in case.
Someone mentioned meeting up when we were in town for the Visitor's Day and I would LOVE to meet up with you! I'll be in town until Sunday (the 8th) and am interested in hearing about each of you, how you got to where you are now, what journeys you have all been on, your fears, excitement, concerns, worries, etc.
Also - saw the recent post about the uniforms/supplies. Thanks for the info about 3-4 sets! When you find out about the supplies specifications, please let us know!
Cheers,
Jenn
Hey guys! I thought I would post this lovely link again for those who are new to this board and haven't read through the whole thing: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=48842923430&ref=ts Also ... my loan wasn't approved which totally STINKS! If one bank doesn't approve me does that pretty much screw me for all? Or should I apply for loans at other places?? .. Or like, a bunch of smaller loans?? Lame-a-roo! Also ... Sounds like a BUNCH of us want to do this "meet-up-for-coffee/drinks/something-after-visiting-day" thing ... I was thinking of making it easier by choosing a place and making a facebook invite so we'll all know what's up ahead of time without having to search for each other and figure it all out on visiting day (not sure how easy it will be to find all of us) ... So -- what's everyone thinking? Coffee, drinks, a meal? ... do we want to stay in the Columbia area, or choose a place in the thick of Manhattan? Let's plan this so we can all make it ... and meet each other ... and socialize. haha. I am so excited to meet all of you!!!
hey mribera! i'm planning on applying for the citibank loan, as well. did you apply with a cosigner? if you didn't, you should try that...and if you did, maybe apply with a different cosigner for the same citibank loan.
also, i'm really disappointed that i can't make visiting day. i already made vacation plans that i can't get out of. hope you guys have fun and can't wait to meet everyone in may!
mribera: glad everything worked out...
is anyone else planning on living on-campus? is it true that first-year nursing students only have the option of living in the bard hall dorms? i was hoping to live in either an on-campus studio or suite, but i don't think that option is available to us?
also, has anyone filled out the housing application-- what's with the ranking and rating???
I tried filling out the housing application but it was very confusing and convoluted, hard to understand what they were asking for and then trying to rank all the places sight unseen was difficult. I finally saw the deadlines that didn't start until march and april ended in June, so I figured I'd go to visiting day with all my questions.
Another question for those that are applying for loans, when is the deadline for that? Obviously before the first day of class but is there an actual set deadline? Anyone that has Oscars ear know anything about it?
Thanks.

And yet another question - for people who've done this school-loan thing before...
Is it reasonable to assume that the federal loans have the lowest rates (6% and 6.8%, right now)? That is, our private loans are basically guaranteed to be higher than those? I'm not sure how much to "shop around" or what to expect as a decent private rate.
