The thread here for the Columbia University ETP program for entry in 2012 is pretty long (45 pages right now!), so I was hoping to elicit some of the same responses for those who are applying in 2013. Let's get to know each other!
Why are you applying to Columbia? What have you heard about the program- good, bad or ugly? Are you nervous, excited, ambivalent?
Looking forward to getting to know some of you!
Hi Everyone!
I have a quick question about the personal statement. On the Columbia website it says that the statement has to be two pages, double-spaced, 12-font, but then on the actual application, it throws in the additional requirement of 500 word maximum. My essay is exactly two pages with 1 inch margins (normal margins, not adjusted) and it is 725 words. From reading other threads, it sounds like this was addressed at an information session. Can anyone provide any input on this? Or does anyone know what requirements they stated at the information session (margin size, word length, etc)?
Thanks!
@holly, don't!! In the info session, they were very clear about being able to tell who could follow directions. They will notice if you play with margins, font size, etc. Try to eliminate extraneous verbiage if you really want that last sentence in. Good luck!!In addition, they said that the advantage to the priority app was to get first crack at the 160 or so seats in the program. They really only take about 10 people to Anesthesia, 20 to Midwifery, etc. it's to your advantage to be admitted to that spot early. So don't wait to apply!!!
Best of luck to all applicants!!!
Thanks for telling me that. I am applying to Pediatric Oncology so I guess I WILL submit my application today!
I'm sure many people went with the 2 page limit since that is written everywhere and the 500 word limit is only specified on the application checklist. I went with the 500 word limit. On one hand, the word limit might be there just so people know not to go over the two pages. However, it could be there to see who looked at the checklist and followed every last word of the the instructions. We have to understand that adcom will be reading A LOT of personal statements and we can't rely on them to forgive/ give them any reason to take points off our applications.
Then again, I didn't attend the information session so I can't give you a definite answer. I know how hard it was to cut down the essay (I had to cut out almost 200 words lol). I played it safe, but I doubt adcom has an app that counts the amount of words on each essay. The most important thing is to make sure your essay doesn't look different from all the others. If you really can't make it more concise, I'm pretty sure the word count won't be a make it or break it factor. :)

Does anyone know by what time do we have to submit our application tomorrow (in order to make the priority deadline)? I'm still waiting on one more rec letter to be e-submitted! :/
