Columbia: Questions about ETP

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

(1) There are four different choices for "supplies" packages that Columbia offers. Did anyone have a preference?

(2) How are the "warm up" jackets. I tend to be chilly and I'm wondering if these are necessary or if we'll be allowed to wear long sleeve shirts under our uniforms.

(3) Size -- I'm about a size 6 and am worried that the XS will be TOO small and the S will be TOO big. Any thoughts?

(4) The most important -- can I hack it? Is Columbia the type of place that lets everyone in and weeds out the people who can't keep up or are the professors generally there to help people who need it? Anyone have the stats on people who have failed out of the first year? I have a BA and an MA but my experience in the sciences is very limited.

Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how Columbia calculates GPA for admission to their ETP program for applicants who have transferred (ie. attended one college, transferred to another).

Do you think they would add everything up and get a cumulative GPA or look at each transcript separately (2 GPA's)? I ask because at the time that I apply I will only have 25 hours at my current university figured into that GPA so obviously it won't reflect my total coursework.

Also, my previous university used a + and - system and current one does not. When I transferred, they took away the + and - to calculate my GPA. On my transcript for my current university it will show all courses including those taken at my previous institution with their respective grades (without + and -) but will not have the transfer GPA.

Adding everything together would benefit me for GPA but I'm not sure looking at the first university's transcript and then looking at the 2nd would be a good measure of what I've done in terms of GPA. I guess this is a pretty complicated issue, but I was wondering if anyone went through anything similar. Thanks for any help or advice you can give!

Hey, I won't be in the ETP program (straight MSN/NNP) but was wondering what the dress code is for you all... I went to a private school for my BSN and had to adhere to a pretty strict dress code including dress pants/shirt/tie, for mornings, khaki's/polo shirt in afternoons. As I update my wardrobe for the upcoming school year, What should I go for? Jeans and an oxford? Business casual? (I'm talking class, not clinical here...) I lived near/hung out in NYC for the 1st 20 years of my life, so I know what the weather's like, just wondering what to expect in terms of Columbia's dress code.....

Thanks!

PS.... Do you MSN people have all your classes on one day? How many clinical days per week? I need to figure out if I can cut it working FT, doing school PT.... Any advice would be appreciated!

There's no dress code at Columbia, THANK GOD. I'm so exhausted knowing that we're almost done with the BSN portion (along with a small case of "senioritis"), that I just wake up, brush my teeth and head to class... just like I was an undergrad again...lol

The only time we do have a dress code is for clinicals. They randomly show up and do "uniform check". Meaning the Columbia SON uniform and WHITE shoes. Hair must be above the collar, and no dangling jewelry (even though we wear our ID's around our neck [?]).

Hi,

Is anyone choosing to buy a PDA? Do any of you have them or any advice for which one to chose? I am also thinking about a digital voice recorder.

If the required reading is not available at Amazon, I am not sure where to find it. Does anyone already have those books or know how long it will take to do this reading assignment?

Thanks!

Hello, I just bought a lifedrive. I did a lot of research and I like that one the best. It will also serve as a recorder although I'm not sure how well that will work if I also use it to type notes while in class. The list of suggested devices are here: http://www.nursing.columbia.edu/clin_resources/mods-apn/clin_log_device/preferred_devices.htm but I'm not sure how up to date that is. Also, some of the current students said we didn't need to buy one yet because they're not required until the specialty year. I wanted one though for note taking, etc. There is also a whole area about PDAs here: https://allnurses.com/forums/f234/pdas-programs-could-we-make-sticky-121240.html?.

Re: midwifery specialty. I was surprised by some of what I learned from the specialty director last Friday. She said that it was not possible to work in that specialty, at least not to work as a nurse (she said not to work at all but then revised it to say that it might be possible if it was a job you were already really good at, was flexible, etc). She also said that it's not possible to do a "concentration," like on HIV/AIDS, integrative care, etc that are offered while in that specialty. I was disappointed by these things so I thought I'd give others a heads up.

is anyone planning on using a laptop to take notes in class? does anyone know if there are outlets to plug a laptop into in the classrooms?

I usually prefer to hand write my own notes, but I had heard from current ETP'ers that plenty of people do take laptops to class each day.

the books are on amazon. i just purchased mine yesterday. here're the links to them to make things easier:

Henke's med-math:

if those links don't work, the ISBNs are given on the accepted student's site.

ec215,

when did you receive your log-in information? I still haven't gotten mine...

i got it maybe end of last week. but according to the postmark it was sent out feb 27. it was a small postcard, like 4x6 so it might just have gotten lost in your mail or accidentally thrown out with junk mail and such. you should call admissions and ask if they can send you another one. congrats on making a final decision! it's been tough but relieving for me.

Hi,

We will receive our BSN after the first "prelicensure" year, right?

I was convinced of this until I saw some posts suggesting otherwise. I went back to review the Columbia website yesterday, and I am still not sure of the answer.

Just want to know what I am getting into...:wink2:

Thanks.

At the information session on Friday we were told that our white coat ceremony will be in May (the 12th, I think) and that we would receive a BSN on our transcript the next time that degrees are conferred by the university. They're conferred in May, October, and February. I assume we would be in the May group but I can't confirm that.

Hi Cmelny,

One of my earlier posts might be the source of confusion. After the December info session I posted that Chad had said that they were going to start holding the BSN until the end of the program. As Dg said above, however, the topic was addressed at the visiting day last week and they have not made that change after all. :nuke:
