Columbia ETP 2010

U.S.A. New York

Hey Y'all!

I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!

I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

I was told by the admissions office that they do not offer interviews. We will find out the first week of February via email.

yeah, i'm pretty sure there are no interviews for columbia's application too

I was told by admissions that they don't interview when I dropped off my application materials. They look primarily at your recommendations, essay, and leadership abilities. Grades count, though they're looking at more than just numbers.

I'm itching to know if I'm accepted or not, so I can figure out if I have to apply elsewhere. February can't come soon enough, but enjoy the holidays in the meantime, all!:yeah:

Dizzy, you get used to the subway. It's easy to navigate and tough to give up!

I can't wait to hear from them, even though I am scared of being rejected which is probably going to happen! I hear they have quite large class sizes, does anyone know how many people they accept per year?

I think their classes are about 150, but they have approximately 600 applicants from all over the US. There's still hope!

As someone who has recently graduated (5 years ago) from ETP, I would strongly advise people not to go. Right now my student loan payment is about $1450 a month, and my take home pay is about $4000 a month. The economics simply do not add up. This doesn't even take into account the fact that student loans now have more unfavorable terms (higher interest rates) than when I went to ETP. At least for getting your RN, just stick with public schools!

Thanks, columbia! Sorry to hear your student loan payments are so high. I know they're offering large scholarships now, which is why I applied. I'd never pay full price to go there - it's just ridiculously expensive! If I get in and don't get a scholarship, I'm not going. There are other places I can go for a lot less. NYU's my #1 choice, but it's just as expensive and has fewer scholarships, so I've written that one off.

Are your student loans just from the ETP program, or does that include the graduate program as well?

No its everything including getting an NP. THe payment does not include my undergrad non nursing degree though. I think everyone should stop worrying so much about getting into ETP! Many people who are accepted choose to go elsewhere because of cost. Average GPAs and GRE scores are slipping amongst accepted applicants. Students now are much more savvy about educations costs these days due to the economy. The cost of ETP and an NP from Columbia is skyrocketing compared to 5 years ago because of worse student loan terms and the fact that rents in the neighborhood continue to rise.

Don't get me wrong I had fun while I was there. I think people should look at cheaper alternatives for at least the RN portion.

Good Luck

Oh by the way, 5 years ago I got one of those big scholarships as well. I think is was 32k. My payment is still freakin ridiculous

Columbiaetp04... did you apply to outside scholarships as well? I'm applying to mostly private universities with accelerated programs, so unfortunately the price is going to be expensive no matter where I end up :(

The admissions counselor told me most people get the 30k scholarship, i think 10k going towards your first year and 20k for your master's...

I really want to go to columbia.. but it's starting to hit me that the cost (and move across the country!) might stop me...

I've already decided that I'm going to take time off between the ETP and NP program (if I get in), even if it means losing the scholarship because I don't want to take on that kind of debt. But every program I've looked at that I'd be interested in attending is quite pricey. Fortunately, I've been saving like crazy, so I won't have quite so much debt. For me, it's doable if I get the scholarship, even if it defrays the ETP by $21k.

SUNY Downstate is very difficult to get into and would cost me $40k anyway, since I'm out of state. I live near Hoboken, but I don't have a car, since everything I do besides sleep is in NYC. So, even if I chose a state program, I'd need to buy a car, pay insurance, etc., so it's worth it to me to pay more in tuition to not have the headache of buying a car, relocating elsewhere in NJ, and have to figure out to drive to clinicals.

So, if I don't go to Columbia, I'll move back to Philly and go to one of the programs there. Unfortunately, they have more requirements, which will keep me out of nursing that much longer. :-( It's all a trade-off, I suppose.
