Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

Hey!

I was on the wait-list for Adult NP.

I am still not sure if I am going to go (I put the deposit down). I have gotten into a significantly cheaper program and really trying to weigh the options. I hope you hear something soon about the wait-list, good luck!

I didn't get into the program this year, but I'm still living in NYC finishing my MPH right now. So I can weigh in on the NYC vs somewhere else thing. I went to a CUNY school for my masters so my tuition wasn't high, but I had to take out a ton of loans just to pay my rent/living expenses here. I took out nearly $12,000 a year on top of working a full time $40,000k a year job, and I **JUST** made it financially living alone in Brooklyn. It really is a very expensive city. I wouldn't trade it for anything though. The experience of living in NYC is really unique and something I'm really glad I did. That said, I'm moving to upstate NY in June for a MUCH cheaper living experience!

Hi everyone, I'm a new student in the ETP program. I know a lot of you are looking for places to live and trying to get situated in NYC. One od my closest friends is also looking for a room ate. She actually works as an administrator at New York Presbyterian Columbia Medical Center (a side note, she is a rising star within NYP's community and an amazing person to know). Here is the link to her apartment's post. It is a gorgeous building that has all the luxuries with a very reasonable cost. You can't beat this. I can personally say tha she is terrific in every way and a great individual all around. Please take a look and contact her if u r interested. http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/roo/2918763948.htmlMy name is Mike btw, looking forward to see you all in May! I'm in the Adult NP track but might switch to Acute.

My name accidentally got connected to The link. Here it is againhttp://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/roo/2918763948.html

Sounds like most of you had made a decision, I forget to check this for a while but I do remember the anxiety of deciding. I can offer some of my insight now that I am two years out of ETP and will finish my master's in December. Columbia is very expensive, and in nursing a degree from a fancy school really does not mean much. A BSN is definitely better than an associate's, but after that, no one cares, at all. Their placements for clinical are pretty good, but for integration some people got good placements and other people got horrible placements, some completely unrelated to their specialty. Which can then add to the issues of getting a job, which is very hard. Some people got jobs right away, while others, myself included, have been looking for a year. MONEY matters, trust me. Loans are all fine and dandy, but I have been looking for a YEAR, which means if I haven't continued on my master's I would be in a very tough place to pay back right now. And even so, I am in a tough place to figure out my rent next month. If you are worried about the money thing, and have a solid cheaper option, I say highly consider it. You will likely end up in the same place with the same chance at a job. Think ahead and keep in mind in the nursing world having attended a school like "Columbia" essentially means nothing to most people. That said, if you want to go into research it can be helpful. Congrats on the incoming ETP class and try not to stress too hard, the answers come as you go along, and none of the issues are ones you won't overcome. Plus your classmates will most likely all be awesome. And of course, New York is a great city to live in.

Wondering if graduates or current students of Columbia's ETP school can let me know what a typical day of the summer program is like. How many hours are you in class and how many hours (and what hours did you get) for your clinicals?

Especially to graduates: did you find it valuable in your job search to have a degree from Columbia ?

Hello everyone! Just joined this site. I'm going to be at Columbia for WHNP. I'm wondering if anyone else is looking for housing? I've been finding some beautiful 2-4 bedrooms places, rent is much more reasonable than a studio for just me.

In response to gabriela121...for summer you have 1 day of clinical at the hospital, 1 day of lab, and then classes on the other 3 days. You are essentially in class all day, although for us one day started later, and one day ended around noon. You are constantly studying just due to the fact that summer is so short. It is not too hard, but it is busy. Part of the hard part is by the time you get organized and have a schedule, it is almost over. Overall it is not too bad, but you do not have a lot of extra free time. For clinical you have one day on a med surge floor, I think it was 7 or 7:30 am till about 3. In the summer it is mainly bed baths and stuff like that.

I already sort of addressed this above, but it has not been helpful in my RN job search to have a degree from Columbia. It is helpful to have a BSN. Nursing is not like business or law school, where the reputation of the institution affects your job prospects. Columbia is more oriented to academic nursing and primary care NP, the big concern at most hospitals for an initial new grad is more related to clinical experience. Basically, when it comes to hospital nursing jobs, the playing field is even with other BSN programs. It is a tough market, Columbia is neither a bonus nor a detriment from what I have found in my experience at the hositals.

I just joined this site. I'm gonnna have to read through this thread, as I was thinking of applying for 2013. But, wow... 63 pages in this thread! yikes.

I am applying for 2013 too. I wonder if it is too early to start a 2013 app thread?

Sfrntobe, what do you mean when you say CU is more academically based? Don't they have 300 more clinical hours than the state minimum? I thought their clinicals had an amazing reputation, but I could be wrong? Thanks!
