Hi,
I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.
Thanks!
@LookingAhead- do you know if it is encouraged/discouraged for the WHNP specialty?
Also, I heard that in order for the NP license to be transferrable to another state, it has to be active in NY for at least 6 months. Does anyone know anything about that? I would probably be moving to MA after the master's portion, and I need to know the rules so I can get an NP job! haha
Can you just take master's classes while you work, though?
It also really depends on your specialty - I think I heard that FNP encourages it, for example, but that CNM all but forbids it. I'm not sure about WHNP.
I guess this is what March 2 will be for, right? Get all our questions answered. :)
@mollymargaret- Did you apply to other programs? What is your first choice? Also, did you ever consider being an FNP and focusing on women's health in practice? I am trying to figure out what would be the best route to go. I know that I want to have the knowledge and training that the WHNP certification offers, but I'm afraid of my decreased marketability after graduation with such a limited scope of practice.
I know we'll get lots of questions answered at visiting students' day, but I feel like the clock is already ticking and I have lots of decisoins to make! Just tell me when I get annoying, haha
@silvrdove-Youre not annoying, no worries.I also applied to mgshp and bc. Columbia is my first choice assuming financial aid works out (living in new york would be way more expensive for me but it's what I want). For the women's health q- focusing here makes sense for me as I have done a lot of working involving sexual health for women. It is one of the main driving factors in my decision to become a nurse. I also hope to work as an NP in a city clinic in the same area for low economic status women. So, I feel the more I know here, the better. To be fair, I come from a family of nurses (acute, family) and they encouraged the family route because of marketability. There is a huge need for family nps. I think it is just about deciding what your goals and what population most appeals to you. I think if you are passionate about something, be it acute, family, whatever- you will be an appealin prospective employee wherever. (maybe I'm just optimistic). But good luck! I am sure you'll figure it out. Maybe try shadowing a women's health np/ family np, seeing how you like each and asking them the questions about job availability.
I think that bringing family or friends for the visit is a great idea, my momma is coming with me because I don't think I could brave the city alone yet.
I guess we've got our first question about family/friends coming along answered from the Visiting Day invitation:
"Please be advised that due to the number of expected attendees, we will be unable to accommodate guests."
