I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a thread for this year's applicants to Columbia's ETP program. So I thought I would start one. The information session was today, but I wasn't able to go. I was hoping someone else went and would be able to post any admission statistics or tips for the personal statement they gave.
Hi Everyone,Just wanted to let you know that I have declined admission to the school (will be attending either Oregon Health and Science University or Case Western Reserve University). I wanted to post since I hope this means a spot opens up on the wait list for someone. Good luck!
thank you for letting us know! I heard OHSU and CWRU are both amazing universities, so good luck, and wish you the best for the future! 8)
Hey guys, I am most likely attending Columbia (acute care), but I'm not able to make it to accepted students day. Could you guys possibly share anything interesting you learn that day? I plan to attend one of the financial aid webinars, so I'm mostly talking about non financial info. Message post, PM, email, carrier pigeon... anything will work! Thanks so much!!
I filled out the application for "on-campus" housing... does anyone know when we can expect to hear back? I've been apartment hunting just in case, mostly via craigslist. I plan to use the Columbia University apartment brokerage firm (discount for Columbia students) if I don't get on campus.
FYI Even though we don't have Columbia IDs yet, if you fax you're acceptance letter they will issue you a temp ID, and the off campus housing/apartment brokerage people can then work with you.
Call earlier today. The person I spoke with said there was a problem with the FAFSA site late last week and they are currently working on the packages. No packages have been sent out yet (and she wasn't able to say when they would begin going out).
Thanks for the update! How frustrating though. I was hoping to have news prior to visiting day
I got an email Thursday of last week that there was a problem with my FAFSA and listed the steps to correct it (5th year undergrad, etc, all the things in the financial aid email we got awhile back). I responded to the email saying I double checked and everything on my FAFSA was right, but haven't had a chance to call yet. Did anyone else get that email?
lifeismuzik, can you talk more about how and where to volunteer? I seem to remember learning about a free clinic in Washington Heights where a lot of nursing students volunteer... is that correct? What types of opportunities are there for volunteering before you have RN certification? Thanks!
I am just wondering… is there ever an allowance to do the program only through the first phase to the NCLEX/RN?? I am thinking this is a no but am trying to figure everything out financially and logistically (as I think we all are) and just to be aware of any options that I may not be considering.

I am no expert, but I think volunteering in as close of a capacity to where you want to work is best. Not only for you to gain relevant experience but also so you can create a professional network.
All of the hospitals have volunteer programs. I have been working with NYP because it is highly ranked, they have a location close to home/school and numerous locations between which I can transfer. Their dept is very slow, but I feel like I am being treated well (free meal when volunteering, nursing floor is treating me really kindly/letting me observe and help where I can etc). While the unit I am on doesn't higher new nurses, they are excited to help me network if I continue performing well.
There is a free clinic through CU--COSMO. You can volunteer there, it is primary care, but it is difficult to get a slot there (let alone a regular slot to accumulate a worthwhile amount of hours). Some people have their community health rotation there. I would not pursue it once here with much effort -- everyone and their mothers will be trying to get just one slot there. I would check out the hospitals -- and maybe hospitals you don't have clinicals at to increase your networking scope.
If you have your RN--I don't know. Don't have my RN yet. I will be looking into that this summer though if I don't have a job yet!
