Columbia BSN/MSN ETP 2014

Published

I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a thread for this year's applicants to Columbia's ETP program. So I thought I would start one. The information session was today, but I wasn't able to go. :( I was hoping someone else went and would be able to post any admission statistics or tips for the personal statement they gave.

This is what it says online

"The BS/MS program is divided into a pre-licensure phase (BS) and specialty phase (MS). It may take about 2.5 years of full-time course work to complete both degrees for most specialties. There are specialties such as Nurse Anesthesia that take 4 years to complete."

Watched the video posted on the website, says we will complete the BSN portion in about 10-12 months

Specializes in Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP.

STar2601, Yes, it was explicitly stated in one of the info sessions that I attended.

My wife is an ED/ER nurse(second career, BSN) and like her, many nurses are content with where they are. She was accepted into the BSN-DNP at her university (which is what she was advised to apply to), but we moved to Germany, instead. We are not back, and at this point, she loves working in the ED/ER, and is learning copious amounts of information... gratis. She is an exemplar of great nursing(in my opinion). In fact, she won a national contest, where she had to write an essay about what the realities of nursing are.(not boasting... ok, maybe a little, I'm proud of her!)

Many of my wife's colleagues, former classmates, and nurse relatives earn above average salaries, have family expenses(in some cases NP is an initial pay cut and more expenses to study), raising children/college, no more patience for continued formal education , etc. I think that that is why most MSN programs are online, because it cuts out the travel time and gives them more study flexibility.

Just my speculations, which are based on what I've discussed and seen. Sometimes, I say things like this, and I offend people - especially because I'm not a nurse/medical professional... strange world. Maybe it's my matter-of-fact manner... :bookworm:

Ariahealingarts. Good distraction. One of the reasons I'm so interested in Vanderbilt is because the program is so short. And, they were so friendly during the interview. I got a really good sense of the school. It's so strange Columbia doesn't interview. I'm going to compare costs and length now to distract myself.

Just wanted to point out that a short program is not always better. It is a LOT of material to cover and that obviously becomes more challenging the shorter the program is. Of course, everyone has a different situation and different needs. :)

so true! that's why i'm worried about the BSN portions of the program being around a year! what most people learn in about 2 years, we're learning in 1 . . . makes me worried :/

Definitely let me know what you come up with if you are open to sharing--Columbia and Vandy are my top 2 choices because of length of program(seems about the same) and the innovation of each...i am also a little worried about that much work/stress/learning in such a short period of time. have any of you spoken with grads/current students of the program? I have read a little on these threads and the Columbia blog, but more the more info for us the better. I keep wondering if I am just completely insane for even considering putting myself under this much stress...

has anyone tried calling the admissions office and asking them when the admission decisions are coming out?

Called yesterday and was told decisions would be communicated no later than next Friday (the 14th), but they are trying to get them out sooner.

yea i had just caleld right now but hadn't gotten any luck :/ all they said was "soon"

I had emailed Naveed yesterday to ask approx when if February decisions would go out (unaware that the buzz was that it would be today) and I have yet to get a repsonse.

Does anyone know how we will find out? Via email or snail mail?

Oh I totally agree shorter isn't necessarily better but I can wrap my mind around insanity for two years verses three... Lol. I dunno. I just want to know I've gotten in to any school and Columbia is the first of those I've applied to send out notifications. Why do I get the feeling it won't be today. I hope I'm wrong.
