I am hoping to be part of the Collin College Spring 2018 Nursing Class and I want to start a new thread where other potential students can communicate with one another. I am taking Micro this summer and plan on submitting my nursing application by the August deadline. I will be taking my PSB exam at the end of July.
Collin no longer gives potential students access to the point system used to rank students. Does anyone know what a competitive PSB score is?
I have a 3.75 for my co-requisites and I am hoping to maintain my 4.0 in my pre-requisites. Can anyone offer any insight on PSB scores?
Thanks in advance!
Maria
Guys, my mail carrier delivered my letter to the wrong post box. Some one else in my neighborhood has the same street #. Any how i got accepted!
Recap of my stats: Associate's of Science from Collin. AA 82 SP 83 RC 91 NS 87 VA 97. 4.0 GPA, all science classes completed at Collin
I have completed stats, nutrition, and chemistry. Currently enrolled in Chem II. I think they are looking at a variety of things when reviewing candidates
mavwagg - you mentioned you live in Frisco. You must live near me because our mail carrier does the same thing all the time - lol. Anyways, I got in too!
I received a bachelor's degree from an ivy league university almost 20 years ago (yep, I'm old!) and completed A&P I, A&P II, Chem I, Chem II, Organic Chem I, Stats, Nutrition, and Micro at Collin. I got A's in all classes except Organic Chem (got a B). I had a B average when I earned my previous bachelor's in psychology. I've held various office jobs, got married and had 3 children since graduating many years ago. After years of alternating between being a SAHM and having office jobs, I am SOOOO excited to be going back to school for nursing. My PSB stats were VE 99, AR 94, NE 81, AA 97, SP 92, RC 99, INS 97, and VAI 88.
For anyone that didn't get in, keep reapplying and don't lose hope.
I would like to offer clarity on some of your discussions. Collin has not "done away" with the point system. The goal is to encourage students to do their best in all aspects, and not worry about equating it to a point. Evidenced based research has shown students either get discouraged and do not apply (when they would have been accepted) or are so focused on gaining a point, the student retakes a class three times to try to get that A. Collin Nursing wants to see a snapshot of you at your best, and that is to focus on your prerequisites and the PSB. Collin does focus on the Reading Comp, because there is so much reading and so much you must retain to be successful. The Vocation Aptitude tells Collin how well you will be as a professional nurse. It is like a profile test, if you have never taken one before, look up Myer's and Briggs, The Caliper Profile, Gallup StrengthsFinder, or the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. This vocational aptitude section like the above personality test answers your level of empathy, if you can you be counted on to finish the tasks you start? How well will you handle high-stress situations? Or it may show that you rank highly in positivity. This might mean you'd be great in a position that has you dealing with rejection on a regular basis, such as in fund-raising or sales. Are you an achiever? You could naturally excel at Type-A jobs, like an executive or another high-level manager role. Professional nursing has traits that are required to be able to provide care, and this section gives that information. Finally your academic aptitude tells Collin what your true academic aptitude really is. Did you get a C in Micro? The selection committees have no idea if you are a single parent of 5 kids working full time and taking 12 hours of school, or taking 1 class at a time. You are better off not repeating the same class over and over to get an A because the selection committee sees you took Micro first grade D, 2nd attempt D to C, 3rd attempt C to B. That does not sit well with the selection committee. They would prefer to see two A and a C, with a above 90% on academic aptitude then all of the repeats. Academic aptitude proves you are capable on making the grades, it was just a bad semester for whatever reason. I am not saying all C's will get you in, but don't take the same class three times to raise your grade, it works against you. You are as competitive as the cohort you are applying with, and that cohort looks different each semester. Please relax, take a deep breath, and you got this!! Don't read more into it than what it really is, which is simply a tool to assist the selection committee based on this one "snap shot" they see of you, that you will be successful in the program and pass your NCLEX with flying colors. Make sure that "snap shot" allows them to see you smiling and looking the best, because that is all they have to go by in making their recommendations to the dean.
Hello All!I just stumbled across this thread and wanted to be in the loop. I received my letter yesterday and was waitlisted as well. Does anyone know within what kind of timeframe we should anticipate a final decision?
Thank you and congrats to all of those that got in!
hi! Accepted student's have until October 16th to return signed intent agreement so I imagine around that timeline, though I am not exactly sure.
Best of Luck!
Thank you for the kind words, Bailey2002! For those of you who didn't make it join me in the next thread, lol. We've got this! Everything will always work out in the end. I know I will get into the program when I am truly ready and you will too!
I am so excited for everyone who made it, Congrats!!!!
