Collegue with restrictions

Nurses Relations

I was wondering if there is any way to find out what the restrictions are on someone's license. A nurse at work is stating she has elderly abuse on he record because she hit her mom, I know this isn't accurate and this is a nursing home so I would like to find out what they are. She also cannot give or touch narcotics but I only know this because she told us. I'm nervous about what she is on probation for but when you verify a license it only states probation with restrictions. I know this facility is extremely short staffed and would probably hire anyone but I'd like to know just to protect the patients as well as myself. This is in Ohio.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

This is an HR issue. What is available to the public is posted in the public search on Nursys or OH BoN

Specializes in Oncology; medical specialty website.

Just do your job and let HR manage your co-worker.

You probably cannot find out anything except from what your coworker tells you. Unless you see her perform actions that make you fear for the safety of the residents, yourself or your coworkers, this information won't be accessible to you, as it is most likely on a "need to know basis." Even if you do see something that needs reporting, you still may not find out after reporting. Like others have said, let the people in HR/your manager deal with any legal restrictions your coworkers have, and stay out of it, unless it directly impacts you or you are a witness to something of concern.

Nursys shows any stipulations, past and present, on any nurse. I was able to look up the license of a former colleague and found out about a previous suspension.

Ohio used to send out a leaflet when I practiced there. It had a listing of all the nurses who had discipline, license #, why disciplined, & for how long, including any penalties. It's been about 20 years, so they may have stopped the practice.

So, if Jane Doe, license 99, was disciplined for having sex with a patient while incarcerated (pt, not Jane)....that was there. Including that Jane lost her license for life (was on probation For 3 years, etc & had to do remedial classes).

I don't know that I agree with it, but it made for an interesting read when my insomnia flared up! Also, when we had someone apply to be an unlicensed aide in home health, we ran their Social Security number & found out the person had been an aide & was under restrictions to not work with the elderly & couldn't participate in Medicare/Medicaid.

We now have a background check just for that, but we didn't 20 years ago & we could have hired someone in another state with serious repercussions for the company. I even had one person get angry that we require a fingerprint background & that it takes so long to do. Well, I can't hire someone with elder abuse history & I'm caring FOR the elderly....
