any colleges that accept excelsior credits??

Published

I am currently in excelsiors lpn to adn program but I kind of want to get into a program that is accepted in all states since I might want to move to a state that doesn't recognize excelsior graduated nurses. Are there any colleges that transfer in excelsior students and accept the nursing courses taken? I'm ok if the A&P and micro aren't accepted as long as most of the nursing courses are. I would prefer an online program since I live in ohio. I know there is one college out there someone recommended a long time ago I just can't remember the name....

unless you are planning to move to california, maryland, and virginia then yeah you should transfer to a different school. otherwise all other states are okay with excelsior. there are several states that would require you to put in rn hours in a different state before you endorse your license to them. plus the three states above can change their mind and allow us to practice in their state. good luck to you!

Virginia currently allows EC grad RNs to endorse in with 960 hours of RN practice elsewhere. :)

Very few schools accept nursing classes from other schools, Excelsior or otherwise. Not likely to happen.

yep, pretty much ... here's the list on ec's site: https://www.excelsior.edu/excelsior_college/school_of_nursing/accreditation_and_licensure/state_board_requirements

the issue you will run into later with an ADN from EC is the credits. Most colleges do NOT accept EC credits since they are not grades. the tests do not count as classes. This means you will have very few credits usable to go into a BSN or RN-MSN program. EC is not the place to go if you are planning on furthering your education, which most hospitals are starting to expect such of their nurses.

Even schools who used to accept the credits are now risking their accreditation in doing so.

I have worked with people with such credits, and they do not qualify for completion programs for BSN or MSN, and usually have to retake classes, or start the BSN program from scratch at a local campus.

Just saw the thread and wanted to give you fair warning of issues you might encounter.

I'm an EC grad, and I applied to three different RN-BSN completion programs and was accepted by all three without an issue. Students actually do receive grades for EC exams and courses, and EC itself is NLNAC accredited.

Also, a friend of mine recently completed an ADN-to-MSN/FNP program as an EC grad.

Then there are the numbers of people I know on this distance learning forum who have continued their education ... Excelsior Grads - Where are they now? - Nursing for Nurses

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Are you a nurse, Zeiqui? To which programs were these nurses applying?

I would love to know what schools were accepting tests with no grades for credit. They are putting their accreditation at risk. And with the new push on capitol hill to tighten up on colleges, this will be changed again. Please let me know who has been accepting the credits (not the degrees, but the transfer of credits) from EC.

I work with universities and accreditation policies. EC, when not giving a final degree (BSN, MSN, etc), can cause issues with transfer of credit. accreditation allows the degrees to be recognized, and any classes that have actual grades can be transferred. But testing or courses that did not get grades, and adn's who were not give GPA's will find it hard to enter some programs.

of course, you can always find programs who will accept anything, but if they are not following accreditation rules on ToC's, then they might not be the best option down the road.

Where are you getting this "no grades" information? My transcripts have grades on them. I also had a GPA (a pretty decent one, too). I think you may have received some misinformation where EC is concerned.

virginia has always allowed ec graduates to practice -- if they meet the required clinical hours. their requirements have not changed. the recent petition (that failed) was trying to get the requirement for clinical hours dropped.

Not quite true -- there was a period of time in which EC grads were not going to be allowed licensure by exam or endorsement in VA unless they finished the program and were NCLEX-ready by 12/31/09. The agreement to allow RNs to endorse in with 960 hours was added a few months later (I don't remember exactly when).

We are talking about a different issue. the state board can let anyone take the test they want. They let non-accredited schools of nursing sit for Nclex all the time. Another issue accredited schools have to explain to nurses about why they cannot further their education.
