Exams are exams! :uhoh3: I have taken three CLEP exams so far (Microbi, Gerontology, Developmental Psych). If you follow the course outline provided by Excelsior (you can print them off the 'net, or Exelsior will mail them to you), you should do well. The course outlines are a great tool. You can also purchase study guides from various companies, or, more cheaply, from ebay, etc. All exams I have taken so far are in the multiple choice format (multiple GUESS sometimes!), so many times if you don't know the right answer, at least you can rule out the incorrect ones. (process of elimination...bonus!) You can also look on sites such as this and the other nursing sites for tips and help. Good luck!

I have actually just finished my developmental psych book. I am using The College Network, and they tell me that if I try to take the exam and fail it twice they will provide a tutor and pay for the exam after two attempts, so I am not as worried as I was. I took the practice test and scored in the high 80's, so I will work on it a bit more before I attempt the exam.

Hi: If you could put it in a nutshell, would you say that Excelsior is basically taking and passing their exams. While you study for the exams with whatever materials you can get from various sources?
My long range plan is to get ADN from Excelsior after finishing LPN next year, and going on to BSN, MSN, etc. with Excelsior. I also heard on this site that my state, Georgia, does not accept Excelsior and that I'll have to get a NY license first. Can anyone shed more light on this?

I guess any school is about taking and passing their exams. With Excelsior the onus is on YOU to take the initiative and do the course work. At a "regular" school you have an instructor or professor to impart the material to you. With Excelsior, its up to you to cover the material as 'in depth' as you think it should be, and to use all avenues of resources as necessary. (Internet, textbooks, etc.) I think Excelsior makes it pretty clear in their course outlines what material should be covered. Personally, I went with a study guide company to purchase complete study guides for each subject, and they too, came with a guarantee of a pass within 3 tries. (So far, its only taken one try for each exam, thank goodness) The study guides came with the main textbook recommended by Excelsior. The text books recommended can be purchased through Excelsior, or from ebay, Amazon, half.com, etc. There are lots of options out there for purchasing study materials, all it takes is some investigating on the internet. The best thing about Excelsior for me is there are no deadlines or pressure to fininsh a course. It takes as long as it takes...days, weeks or months. There are pro's and con's to both 'regular' schools and schools like Excelsior. It all depends on what your learning needs are. I chose Excelsior because there was no waiting or wait lists, I didn't have to quit work, and again, I could do courses as quickly (or slowly) as I wanted to. Its been the right choice for me. If in doubt, why not take a non-nursing course from Excelsior first, such as Developmental Psych or Gerontology? It will give you a better idea of what to expect, and you will get a start on credits if you choose to go the traditional school route. (You don't need to pay the Excelsior enrollment fee until after you start taking the nursing coureses.) Good luck, and let us know how you are doing!

Barbiedee, if I have no college credits right now, can I get everything I need through Excelsior? And I assume College Network is just a study guide company.

Can I do everything through Excelsior if I wanted to? Get study guides from them also?
