Has anyone applied to College of the Desert for the Fall 2015 / Spring 2015 application period for the ADN program? I'm curious as College of the Desert told me they had more than 400 applicants, and they didn't know how smoothly the selection process is going to go; now that there is only one application period per year, the TEAS should be taken before applying, and the implementation of the multicriteria screening and ranking process. I have applied 6 times - hopefully I get in this time :-)
Hello! I'm currently looking into pursuing nursing, I did my anatomy & Physiology about 7 years ago (yes a long time) and got a "C" grade, horrible! But i've been thinking of re-doing that class regardless, I currently live in LA area and going to be moving to the inland area this summer, Any recommendations as to how to go about doing the pre-reqs, meaning would it be best to do it in the school of interest for the program, or to do pre-reqs at any accredited school and then apply to whichever school you're willing to commute to? I've hard of the new policies on COD regarding acceptance into the RN program and thought if I do all my pre-reqs there I have a better chance of being accepted. I'll be honest, doing all the pre-reqs and then having to wait many years to even start the program can be a bit disheartening. Thank you so much for any helpful responses.

Hi and welcome Mum! I understand feeling disheartened, I too did many of my pre-reqs a long time ago! COD has been a great school for me - the professors (for pre-reqs) have all been very helpful when you take initiative and ask questions. As far as COD changing policies for acceptance, they absolutely have! With that being said, one used to get preference for completing 12 or more units at COD - now, you can get 5 points for that or get 5 points for other things within the same category of the multi-criteria process, such as financial need, being a vet, first generation college student, working while taking pre-reqs, and there are others I can't recall off the top of my head. So, if COD is your school of choice I would say, why not just do pre-reqs there. Although, if that isn't something you want to do right now, you can absolutely do them at another school. I know of many people who have done this. I would just caution you to do your research as to which classes meet the same requirements - A&P I, A&P II, Micro, and English (make sure your English has a research component). Also, I know this is thinking in advance but, COD will only use your TEAS V score for points IF you have passed on your 1st attempt. This is very important as you want as many points as possible when you apply. So, lets say if you were to score below 62% on your 1st attempt and retook it for a 90%, you still wouldn't get to take advantage of the points for the TEAS V. Also, COD only accepts one repeat of a science pre-req within 7 years. I would contact the counseling office to see if you could basically start with a clean slate - I'm not sure what the policy is on that. I had to retake A&P I as per their recency requirement (7 years), I did hear that this may have changed? If you have any further questions please don't hesitate! It certainly sounds like nursing is what you want - so, go for it! I wish you luck!
Thanks Journey! as of spring 2014 it will be exactly 7 years since I took a science class. So I might have to start all over again, which I don't mind since my original Anatomy/Physiology score wasn't so good. I'm already looking at the different CC around the area. TBH Mt. San Jacinto is much closer to where I'll be living but i'm definitely exploring my options as to the different CC's. I've also looked at the information regarding the TEAS V and I've found some good resources to practice and study my weak areas. I'm going to be meeting with counselors to get more information on the requirements. BTW do you know where I can find more information regarding the point system?
Thank you!

It sounds like your on the right track! The best place for more info on COD's ADN program would be their nursing page, it has many links that are full of useful information. This link is specifically for the multi-criteria selection process:
just copy and paste this in your browser. You can also go collegeofthedesert.edu then click on academic programs and look for ADN nursing under health sciences for more info. If this some how doesn't work you can PM me I can give you the link that way. Keep motivated and you'll be ready to apply before you know it!
Oh - COD is offering A&P I this summer, and they haven't opened registration yet so perhaps you could start there. I retook it last summer... definitely kept me focused but an "A" is doable! Also, COD doesn't maintain a wait list so if you have a good amount of points, you can be in the first time you apply! This is the first time they are selecting applicants this way - we'll see how it goes :-)
Thank for the link! Very helpful! I'll definitely keep that in mind! I'll be doing some more research! But I'm definitely looking forward to this new adventure! :-)
I'm happy to help! I too have a pretty "non-traditional" path towards nursing, every little bit helps when you're figuring out what will work for you!
Totally understand, I had originally pursued nursing 7 years ago but life had different plans for me, now 2 kids later in ready to pursue my dreams :-) thank you so much for everything
We have very similar stories! It's time to focus on us, in doing so our families will benefit too! Win win keep with it :-) I'm on pins and needles waiting for news - hopefully I can give you more insight into the program soon.

Sorry to hear that! These schools are waiting so long that we're going to be scrambling to get everything done if we get the good news! Still hopeful!
