College Chem and Organic Bio Chem... & PSY majors read

Published

Here is a weird thing. I have a degree already in PSY and im currently taking my pre reqs in a community college. I just finished AP1. (got an A :) ) and im enrolled for College Chem in the summer. Im trying to get into Rutgers and it sais that Organic Bio Chem is a pre req...but the assistant dean said the equivalent to that is College Chem at my community college. I just think its weird because my community college offers Organic Bio Chem...i just dont understand why College Chem at my community college is equivalent to Organic Bio Chem at Rutgers when my community school offers Organic Bio Chem. Weird. But i asked her several times and she said College Chem.

Has anybody had any experience close to this with these Chem courses?

Also, Stats is a pre req too...but since i have a Psy Degree i had to take this class called Quanitative Methods, which is a Stats course but twice as hard as Stats. Have any of you heard of Quan Methods?

Anyway, Rutgers said they woudl accept Quan Methods as my Stats pre req. Thats pretty awesome. Has this happened to any other Psy Majors???

Quantitative methods counted for my stat course, I just had to get my old school to fax over a syllabus. (It was actually called "experimental design and quantitative research methods," but it's the same course I'm sure) Don't know about the chems, but trust the nursing school over the CC.

The statistics course was a HUGE thing at the local 4-year school that I looked at. My sister has a degree in Sociology with a Psych minor, and she had to take Experimental Psychology, which was a 400-level course that dealt not only with learning everything you do in stats, but actually applying it to 4 experiments during the semester and writing a 25 to 30 page paper for EACH one.

The nursing program at the 4-year wanted her to take their version of Probability and Statistics...which was a 200-level course, and if you read the math description, line by line is was exactly like the course she already took, AND was more difficult.

The Director of the Nursing Program disagreed with her, and she took it up the ladder (evidently it was a major conflict between the Math dept and the Nursing dept), and in the end, she did not have to take the 200-level course.

She ended up going to another college altogether...it left a really bad taste in her mouth and it seemed like the Nursing Department, Math Department and the Registrar's office was working against each other, and she let them know that this was the very reason she decided not to go there b/c they seemed so disorganized.

Funny, I just had this experience myself today when I had my credit evaluation at the nursing school I was accepted to!!!

I thought for sure I would have to take organic/ biochem, but they accepted my Gen Chem II as equivalent, Hurrah!!

I was a psych major and they did accept my stat class, I would have been very unhappy if they hadn't!

Good luck!

Was your stat class Quanitative Methods...or somethign clsoe to that?

Do any other Psy majors know of any other classes that may be accepte as pre reqs. For example

I took Social Psychology...got an A. Will that count for Sociology?

And i too took Experimental Psy and got an A also...what pre req coudl that count for?

I suggest you schedule an advising session, even if it is by phone, with the academic advisor of the program you want to attend. Make sure they have an unoffical copy of all your transcripts. Most major universities have a data base of classes that others have transferred in and what their equivalents are. If a class is not listed there then the advisor will most likely either ask you for a syllabus that she will forward to the dept. head of the course you are trying to get it counted as or have you do that so you have written approval for when you do transfer into that school. I was an academic advisor for several years at a large public university and this is they way we did it and many other big univerisities I corresponded with also did it this way. If the syllabus doesn't closely match what you are trying to get it counted as then you have your work cut out for you but its not impossible. It's all about presenting a plausible argument for what you learned being congruent with what is taught in the other course. For example, if you had social psychology and the syllabus doesn't quite match the soc 101 class, perhaps you can have your old professor write a letter to go more in depth about what the class entailed or present copies of some of your papers to prove overlap of material. Most dept. heads are open to this if you can just prove you've covered the material. And of course, if you're pressed for time and just want to get the class done without taking the class you can CLEP it.

thank you...I will try to contact somebody. What doesn Clep Mean? sorry for all the questions. I jsut dont want to take the same course twice.

Gannon1qb,

My Stat class I think was plainly called "Statistics for the Social Sciences " and was required for my psych major to take the experimental psych class. I think any stat class would transfer, especiallly if it is considered more difficult.

I took sociology and social psych, but I don't know if one could count for the other, though it would seem reasonable. The pre req's depends on what core requirements the school has for all their students and the requiremnts specifcally for the nursing program. The college I went to only wanted 1 philosophy ad history, but my nursing school requires two of each....so now I have to start by doing hist. and phil. and a psych class I didn't take that they require, even though I have a psych degree...!! And I've already taken all the science req's. Well, It is only one semster then I'll start the nursing in the spring!!

CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. Basically what you would do is contact the college and tell them you would like to take a Sociology CLEP Test. If you pass you get the college credit. The following link will take you to the college board page that discusses the clep test in detail. http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

My friend who is a history buff took 2 History CLEP's even though she never took a college history class and earned 6 college credits it 4 hours.

Are you starting nursing school in May of '08? Are you doign Accelorated BSN?

Im starting in May of '08. Still have some more pre reqs to take. so in May '08 I will be doing the Accerlorated BSN program...hopefully at Rutgers if i get in.

Do any other Psy majors know of any other classes that may be accepte as pre reqs. For example

BA Psyc here...

I feel that Social Psyc and Sociology are really two quite different courses. Having taken them both, Soc Psyc dealt more in theories and case-studies while Sociology was more anthropological...at least IME.

Another pre-req that'll count toward my nursing degree is my Adolescent Psyc course, which will fulfill the Human Growth & Development course requirement.

Experimental Psyc was a great course, and might offer experience in an applied research BSN course, but I honestly don't see it directly fulfilling anything else. I hope I'm wrong on that though...I'd hate to repeat those experiential projects if I could at all avoid it (talk about labor-intensive)!

Best of luck!
