CNRA schools ranking

Does any one know the rankings of current CRNA schools? I need to start researching. Though more than likely I'll take whatever school that will accept me. Because my GPA isn't what it used to be.

I'm currently in a accelerated straight to CNL MSN degree program and won't be done til next summer (with the MSN) But first I must finish my RN BSN program first (graduate in Dec 07). The accelerated pace is hurting my grade (18 mos. from AS to CNL MSN) but I don't want to move down to the traditional program.

The question is, will having the MSN degree make up for the less than stellar GPA (3.00 currently with the first 1/3 of BSN) for CRNA school acceptance? My goal has always been CRNA, but someone else is footing the CNL MSN tuition. And the deal is too good of an opportunity to miss.

Specializes in ICU, currently in Anesthesia School.

As the CNL is a new masters in the field of nursing, I am not sure what commitees might make of it. As for program rankings, they are based on the USNWR that was last done in early 2000. The rank of the program is less significant than the way it is run imo. As has been said before on this board, (look up the thread Grades, GRE, etc.) Grades are only a part of what the schools look at. If you are an RN now, get involved at work, do research if it is available, get certified and have recommendations that rock. the less than stellar GPA can be overcome, but you gotta have other data that show you are not your GPA.

Thank you for your suggestion. I am not and RN yet but expect to be licensed by the beginning of next year. Meanwhile, I'm trying hard to bring my GPA up; I have 2/3 of the program to finish so there is some time.

The current issue of US News and World Report has the rankings of Nurse Anesthesia schools and other graduate programs. I just was looking at it today in the market. I believe #1 was Virginia Commonwealth, followed by a military school. Anyway, pick it up-- it'll tell ya!

Also pick up last weeks Time magazine. It has an article about how these school rankings are based on nonsense and how many schools are starting to opt out of such lists. In any event, why pay attention on rankings if you don't know what the specific ranking criteria is? Seems pointless to me.

Oh so true. That goes for nearly every type of school out there (law, med, business, etc....).

Top CRNA schools from 2003:

1. Virginia Commonwealth University

2. U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Texas

3. Navy Nurse Corps

3 (tie). Rush University

Here is really good link if you are interested in becoming a CRNA. http://www.anesthesia-nursing.com/school.html

By the way there is only two military CRNA schools. One is in San Antonio, Tx and one is Bethesda, Md. They both have very similar curriculums. All the services including USPHS use these two schools for all military trained CRNAs.

I think showing your ability to complete/do well at graduate level nursing work can only help your application. The military doesn't really tell you why or why you weren't accepted, but I think my graduate level nursing courses were a deciding factor in my application last year.

I have often wondered really what the ranking really mean. I would not focus my search for a school solely based upon US News Rankings. I would however look at accreditation and how many pass the certification test the first time. Looking solely at ranking would be like saying; I want to play in the major leagues but I only want to play for the New York Yankees.

This is excellent advice. A program's length of accreditation is available on the AANA website under accredited programs, and if they should post first time pass rates on their individual websites. If it's not there...ask.
