CNO & practising outside of ontario

Published

Hello ladies and gentleman:

This is a question for nurses registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario(CNO), many pleases and thank yous :)

I am registered with CNO but I am applying to programs outside of Ontario to advance my nursing studies and thus am required to obtain my license for the specific province I plan to go to school in. I am unable to find any information about this on the CNO website. Has anyone left Ontario for another province? If so, do you have any specific advice for tackling this process.

Thank you in advance for your assistance ;)

Look on the College of Nurses website for the province you are moving to (ie CARNA, SRNA etc) the application instructions will be under registration-nurses who are already registered in Canada.

I already have the application for the province I will be moving to. I am just wondering if CNO charges any fees to submit the verification request. I would call CNO but it's a long weekend in Canada and their office is closed until next week. Just curious if, in the meantime, any Nurses from Ontario have relocated to a different province and what the process/transition was like.

I relocated in Canada, I do not recall paying extra for verification, what does the application form say?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

If you'd care to share a bit about your experience of relocating and practicing in another province. I would love to learn whatever I can from someone who has already done it :)

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

I relocated quite a few years now from Manitoba to Alberta. The process is fairly simple but there are a lot of incidental costs. And it takes a long time. Hopefully over the next few years, as the various Colleges and Associations work toward streamlining and reducing the red tape, it'll be quick and easy. Unless Canada goes to a single registry for regulated health care professionals such as RNs, PNs and NPs, there will likely always be a requirement for verification of registration in good standing in the province where you're currently registered. Registered nurses might be the most trusted profession in the eyes of the public, but we're not to our Colleges. The cost for this isn't typically a lot of money, but the Colleges won't do anything without payment in full in advance. A lot of people (me included) had their applications in the new province delayed because the College sends out a snail mail to tell applicants they have to submit these fees... and the application moves to the bottom of the pile. Oh, and don't forget to include the GST... that can hold things up too. I wish you well on your new endeavor.

Thank you for your reply and the sage advice. I can't tell you how many times I've been to that damn Notary's office, he might as well be my boyfriend now :p
